Well a standard rebuild and refit when I needed one done a while ago was £2500. Of course after you've already paid the money, there are untold people who will helpfully tell you that they can get it done for £1500 by their mechanic friend. To hit 400bhp safely you will want a better build while you're there and looking at the cost of decent rods, pistons, bearings etc. it's got to be significantly more than £2500 for that sort of build?

Default forged rebuild costs

Hi
Im doing just that as in a total rebuild using forged pistons n forged rods new bearings seals and gaskets uprated studs / bolts everywhere
also new water pump new oil pump n cam belt etc
and anything else i feel is needed
up 2 now its cost around £1400 in parts
not sure about any machining costs yet but prob around £100 - £150 for honing bores and refacing surfaces etc
my labour charges are free 2 me and in a mechanical tech n used 2 build racing spec motor bike engines so this is an easy build for me
i costed this out 2 a few engine builders who quoted any where between £1500 for a rebuild std engine 2 std spec or anwhere upto £5000 depends what spec u want which was resonable ish if your not mechanically capable
im doing this myself because ive got spare time and i think i can get a better spec cheaper because my time is free
regards Andy

it would be better to change the gearbox over the engine as a standard engine once mapped correctly can handle near 400bhp but the 5 speed gearbox won't

Some 5 speeds don't like 290lb/ft, never mind anywhere near 400BHP. Well my old one didn't.

So like Steve say's, it would be wise to factor the cost of a better gearbox in also.

Newage STI 6 speed seems to handle the power well, Alan Bell's certainly is, from what I've read. Stevebt's is coping well with a lot of power too.

It's either that or a PPG or similar gear set, to the best of my knowledge.
