Advice please for 500+ BHP
I am helping my brother rebuild his sti 8, having recently blown a 2.5 block liner in half and now having a top hat linered block, he is thinking of changing to a bigger turbo.
At the moment there is:
2.5 Block case fully forged, Top hat liners
sti8 JDM big port heads with standard cams
GT30R with 0.63 ex a/r
APS drs725
Perrin Fuel rails
Bosch 044 in tank
Sard 800's
Hydra ecu,
He is looking for a reliable (if there is such a thing) 500 - 550 bhp, I have been told that the standard fuel lines are not capable of more than 500 bhp, and obviously current turbo is not really adequate for the 500 +.
Any advice on the fuelling & turbo would be much appreciated, also any ideas what he should be looking to get back if he sold the GT30R which has covered around 10k miles.
thanks
Jay

We have an idea of what to get, but would like to hear what others have done running similar power level.

if its a ej257 then thats prob your reason, just can't take that sort of power in some cases (not all) i know there was a thread posted on here where someone split the block and i know of a few others as well.
i asked the same question, well how to get a reliable 500, the truth is theres no gaurenties at that power.
best option i came out with in the end was a 2.33 closed deck block, relinered and then a rotated garret gt35 (iirc).
but as said it may or may not last

Block has now been fitted with Top hat liners, and have not heard of anyone that has split one of them.
Big thankyou to Scoobymania for the Rebuild.
Was more interested to see what people have done with the fuel delivery with more than 500 bhp, I.e new lines to the front & use existing lines as a return etc, or have people mananged to run upto 550 bhp with the standard fuel lines

If you want to keep up with a 450hp classic, spend money on setup, and getting the thing responsive. But it's nice to have the option for more power!
I wouldn't bet on being able to supply the fuel through the standard lines, but what you can do is put in a new line in braided teflon hose, and use it as the return, then you can use the original return as a second feed line. Or you can go larger on the fuel hose, up to -6 (10mm bore) which should be good for 550-600hp on it's own. If you do run a new hose, do NOT run a rubber lined stainless hose through the car, it needs to be a PTFE lined hose or you'll get fuel vapour in the car.
For proper track work, take the opportunity to put in a 1.5litre swirl pot and external bosch pump.
Swap the 0.63 housing for a 0.82 housing and you should be comfortably over 500hp.

I love this
Mines one of those pesky 450+ classics ;-) and no modded new age has gone past me (dont get me wrong, I'm not talking serious stuff just track days like Brands, Coombe, Snetterton) yet.... There was a black Evo that claimed to have in excess of 650bhp at Snetterton in November - that was fairly amusing (Pub talk numbers)
Having gotton a decent suspension (Exe-tc) and a gearbox that should last (PPG) the biggest problem I find on the track is that is that once my fuel is under a third of a tank the car gets starved of fuel on the bends - I can understand when its down a lot lower but as it approaches a quarter I have to fill up - that was never an issue when it was running under 450bhp
Is that what the swirl pot sorts out? - fuel starvation

I didnt but he didnt get past me either
Straight line speed was good but cornering ability wasnt great and this let him down - saying that he does passenger rides whereas theres just me in the car and mine is at least 200kg's lighter
I doubted the power as I looked at the engine - think it was a 2.3 litre with a GT35 Turbo. I was somewhat suprised when he said that its run on 97 ron fuel????? - think his name was Dave?

Yes a fuel swirl pot is your friend, you can then run with the tank empty and no surge, the only issue is when it runs out, it does so all of a sudden!
