cambelt slipped need advice!
i posted 2 days ago about the problems i have been having getting my car through the mot to only to be called by the garage today saying that the had managed to reduce the emissions to the level where all it needed was a good run to warm the cats up and it should pass, which they were in the process of doing today .
then i got a call the car died 2 miles down the road from the garage and they had to to limp it back on 2 cylinders and they were taking a look at the car to try and find out why it died!!! then i got a call 30 minutes later saying that the cambelt had slipped round 7 teeth on 2 of the cylinders and they were getting no compession on those cylinders!!!!
can anyone tell me whats likely to have been damaged and whats the best coarse of action to repair it
they aint sure if the valves were bent or what when i got the call but were investigating saying they were going to reset the belt and see what happens, trying to assure that its slipped through bad maintainance and could go at anytime asking when the belt was changed last it was changed when it should of been.

As you no Ether way the motor has to come out weather you buy new or rebuild the existing, when the heads are of this will give a good idea on the extent of the damage I would make my decisions then based on that cost. And compare from that point on labour etc the cost of a new block verses a rebuild.

Jumped 7 teeth!! Why???? That is a catastrophic failure of something in the belt train. Tensioner collapsed? guide pulley disintegrated? There are guides at the cam pulleys which prevent the belt jumping at these locations. I'd be asking that garage questions!

In the good old days, I never used to leave my interesting car at a garage in case they thrashed it. Now every car has a rev limiter, all anyone can do is take it to the red line which it should be able to do anyway.
It does sound like something else failed for the belt to jump that far and I can't think of any reason the garage would be working in that area of the engine to cure an emissions problem.
Of course if the garage had caused the problem, getting them to admit it is unlikely.

went to the garage today and all was fine am i the luckiest in the world guy or what for the cam belt to jump 7 teeth on 2 cams then get limped back to the garage and not cause any damage the hydrolic tensioner had seized up and the belt was flapping about all over they replaced that reset the belt and sorted!! and tbh the car never felt so good to drive i got the garage and heard a impreza on tickover in the workshop and thought that cant be mine surely and it was and to be honest the car has never run so good its like a new engine under the bonnet and pulls so much more than it did.

If the belt jumped 7 teeth it WILL have caused damage in the engine.
At the very least it will have bent a few valves when the belt jumped. When the engine is restarted after just fitting a new belt, the bent valves are pulled straight which damages the valve guides etc !
Don't want to scare you but there could be more damage in the engine than you think !

Depending on which way it jumps you can get away with it, I've seen the AVCS reading -75 degrees on a new age car, thats almost 1/4 of a turn and it was fine.
Quite often a by product of changing the belt and not renewing the tensioner on the 99 onwards cars.
