Can it the ECU be upgraded/modded? Mapping advice needed
Okay this is a question on behalf of quite a few of the Subaru Forester.org lads in regard to modding their cars and specifically their ecu's, with.....
Autoboxes!!
Now we've asked a number of people, companies and mappers and have got back such a variety of responses where all sat here scratching our heads, all say they can map a 97/98 Forester until you mention the Autobox. Then usually all goes quiet.
Some say "Not sure, i'll find out and then you never hear from them again"
Some say "Of Course, no problem, we'll give it a try!"
Some say "Cant be done"
Some even say "The autobox has a seperate controller and therefore cant be mapped as the aftermarket ECU's dont talk to the controllers or someother technobabble"
So in short, it can be done unless it cant be done, but we'll give it a try but the aftermarket ECU wont work with your auto gearbox
Is there any mapping gods out there, who know what there talking about who can lay this myth to rest and finally say, Yes or No?
Please? Please! PLEASE? please
can anyone shed any light on this.

PM me as a reminder and when I have some time later I'll get the lappy out and look it up.. the forrester at 98 has the 99 impreza ecu in whcih means it should be mappable with EcuTek..

cheers Simon.
There are a number of Auto forester owners who have 97/98/99 models but its the Auto thing which is the sticking point.

yes.. hence if it can be ecutek'd it shouldn't be an issue as the original ecu and code will be retained. . although have looked into this before.. what is different other than the gearchange ecu wise.. ie. you don't want it revving it's **** off when it changes gear..

Again thanks Simon, i'll dig that out but to be honest I think thats me stuffed as my Chassis number is in the low 5000's so its one of the first to be built and its a 97.
I know a few of the lads with newer cars have ecutek ecus but there is a bunch of us with pre 99 models, all Jap imports with the same problem. there about 8 of us!
I'll get the ecu number and thanks for looking.

doh..
it is always something I have been interested in looking into.. does the auto box or auto boxes ecu limit the engine rpm when it changes gear or is it quick enough that it doesn't need to? only one way to find out..
