I think it was in 94 that it became compulsory for road vehicles to have cats. Im not 100% on this. Im sure someone will know!!!

Same for upto about July 95.
As the wrx is an import (classic shaped obviously) the MOT database doesn't have an exact match for an emissions test so uses the Basic Emissions Test
which is a lot more lenient then the cat test, although convincing some MOT testers may prove difficult.
I get mine tested where i bought it from and they know the rules.

This sounds all good if you are running d-cats.
But what about road side test by the Police? will it pass then?

They can't test emissions at the roadside and they have to have proper sound testing equipment but the easiest way for them is to give you a warning about the exhaust (Section 59) or don't buy/have a really noisey exhaust.

I've run mine for about 2 years and have never been stopped for the exhaust (made by Revolution), i have been stopped for other matters though

you could always ask but try to pick a MOT place that deals with jap imports regularly as most should know the correct test.

Not correct - up to Sep 95 your import can be tested via non-cat test.

Had too many beers - so not checked this image, therefore if I am wrong then apologies

I'm thinking you'll have more than the Mot man to worry about if you arrive with one of the above cats stuck between the turbo and middle pipe!

Damn you you nicked my image (which, tbh, i nicked) it's 31st July 1995 (last column 4th box down) although this is taken from the 1998 issue.

But if in any doubt ask your MOT tester to have alook at the MOT inspection manual to clarify whether your car needs a cat test or not.
