Sounds like you're getting fuel cut. The ecu senses that you're making too much boost and cuts the fuel to protect the engine.

There are cheaper ways of dealing with the problems like dawes devices but a remap would be the best and safest way to resolve it.

Sorry what i meant is that the standard ecu runs 0.8bar was it running 1 bar before you fitted the intercooler?

WRX/STi Saloon ECU's 2C, U8, W6, W9 - 11.47psi held to redline. Fuel-cut 14.57psi

0.8 bar, fuel cut is 1 bar

Get an apexi fc (if you can find one) get it mapped and you will really feel the benifits,

You spent money on a FMIC, make the most of it and buy a programmable ECU

Thats my thoughs.

Or try Enduring Solutions Limited for a cheaper ecu alternative.

Is your ecu chipped already or is there already a boost controller (manual or electronic) on your car as you shouldn't be making 1 bar as standard.

Don't fit an FMIC without a remap.

My take on this is that you've got leakages in your intercooler pipes. FMICs have many joins in their piping which increases the likelihiood of there being leaks. Doublecheck all the joins in your intercooler piping.

An air leakage is one of the main causes of backfires (I assume you actually mean backfire and not misfire since it is happening while changing gear).

Did you also fit a VTA BOV when you put on the FMIC? That can also cause backfiring.

Second that thought, leaks can cause all manner of annoying problems and be very hard to pinpoint. imho the easiest way to tell if you have one is to measure when 1 bar boost comes in, if its leaking it will be way higher up the rev range than with the top mount.

Air leaks rarely lead to you running higher boost than before.

I think he meant that if there is a leak the boost threshold will increase i.e. the turbo won't get up to speed untill higher in the rev range

Apexi Fc are still available without issue.. or esl board.. both work well..
the car is not mapped for the intercooler which is 99% of your problem.

There you go then Steve,

Apexi Power FC, should be able to get it fitted and mapped for £800 + another £200 for the boost control kit fitted if you wanted 1.4bar boost
