The actual saving you'll make at the 6p ltr difference will be negligible, especially when you take into consideration you're probably getting better MPG using SUL. You may save 20p a day depending on the mileage..!
Then there's the fact that the car won't run as well and it'll take several tankfuls of SUL to get that back unless you reset ECU, etc, etc...!
If it bothers you that much get a diesel or the bus..

Is anyone able to clear up whether or not a >1996 UK spec ECU is able to detect and alter its map for anything over 95RON unleaded. There will be no increase in performance or mpg if it uses the 95RON map when burning super. Also the mpg increase in using and mapped for super is negligable, less than the extra cost of it.

The UK spec cars can make use of the extra RON yes, but its only really peak torque that majorly improved, peak power is improved by a lesser amount, if your never using much boost then you won't notice any economy improvement either.

That makes a lot of sense. For me, just switching from V-Power to Tesco 99 saves me £7 on every fill-up at the moment (mine is Power FC equipped and mapped for V-Power). If petrol gets any more expensive I will switch to normal unleaded. I'm not rich enough to throw money away pointlessly. Most of the time over the winter I'm just commuting and running my family around. Once or twice a day I might floor it to overtake. I don't need high octane at the price it is at the moment.

I have always used the Shell stuff. I dont wanna waste money either and have actually spent the last 10k miles driving like pslewis so i had no need for 98 ron, BUT my car is mapped to it, and i wont put anything less in it, period.

same as above. when i first bought current my99 uk scoob last december, i was using tesco99. didnt like that and boost was irregular. for the (then) sake of about 3-4p p.l. extra, i started using v-power. never looked back.
was £1.05-9p a litre friday, and thats in scunny, where 7-8 weeks ago it was 97.9p a litre

Well interestingly enough, I had mine mapped for V-Power but for one reason and another wasn't planning any hard driving for a month or so. I ran it on Shell standard unleaded during that time to see what would happen and there were no problems at all in normal driving, knock readings were fine.
