Default To resonate or not to resonate?

Hi all

Have decided (finally) to get a ninja sport cat d/p for my 1998 wagon. Will put a new centre pipe in as well and keep my Prodrive box as I like its sound.

I am in two minds about the centre as I've spoken to people and read threads about non-resonated c/p's causing booming (if thats the right word) in Wagons. Views appreciated.

I run a resonated center pipe on my wagon to tone the noise down a tad..... still noisy though.

Cheers Rigga...nice wagon, wish I had a few of those goodies!!
Am hoping the combination of the sport cat and prodive backbox might just control the noise to within resonable limits.

2dB difference between H&S Resonated and un-resonated.
Had 2 cars tested at Goodwood which were same year, similar mods, same exhaust with the exception being one had resonated centre the other didn't

Unresonated was 97-98dB
Resonated was 95dB

To those that do not know how db works..... 2db is actually quite a difference in sound.

You'll want that on the motorway...or ear plugs.

decats are offensive, I swapped my decat centre pipe for the prodrive PPP decat resonated one and the car is sooooo much nicer now but still drones on long runs.

My wagon has the full after burner de cat and i had the resonater section removed and the car sounded far too loud, driving through my local multi storey i can set off car alarms with a blip of the throttle. It now has the afterburner bung fitted in the back box and its made it slightly better.

Better to has a resonator section than a bung...as the latter restricts flow and some power I would of thought. Oh course, you can still remove the bung when you want to...

It was actuallly the opposite, when the car was being mapped by andy f it wasnt quite making the boost figures he was looking for and after i removed the reosnator it solved the problem. Having since fitted the bung it hasnt affected the power but yes it can still be removed

Interesting....isn't resonator boxes just straight through with bit of noise dead material in? Why did it make the difference?
Hope it is on my new 3" full system that's in the post.

Whilst mapping the car andy said it was like there was something restricting the power and the resonator was the only standard part of the exhaust system left after this was removed the car reached the higher boost figure he was looking for although with it being the wagon the noise inside the cabin did start to get a bit much. I didnt mind it but the misses and the kids in the back didnt enjoy it much.

Hmm, wonder if after market resonator boxes are different from oe jobs? Do the oe units have chambers within the tube?

My replacement was just a straight through pipe.

I removed my center section because I wanted a little more 'burble'.... I was told that it was a cat and removing it should free up the flow a little allowing for a crisp throttle response.

Not too sure if it has made it louder as such....just a little deeper TBH... I haven't noticed any droning on long runs as of yet.....

Just collected my true 3" stainless system, boy it looks big and no cats, resonator section is a decent length but straight through, no kinks or restrictions...should be a sweet noise.
