ScoobyECU - NOT WORKING!!!
This post is primarily for Scott T. of Polar Performance, but, of course, any advice will be greatfully received from anyone...
Hi Scott
RE: W6 ECU with ScoobyECU chip fitted
I’m sorry to bother you but I wonder if you may be able to help me…
I purchased a replacement W6 ECU for my ’93 WRX, complete with your P.P. Scooby ECU chip installed inside (however, this item wasn’t purchased form you, but from a third party on ebay).
On swapping the ECUs over, when I turned the key the engine fired but could not hold an idle - it engine instantly died and stalled (very similar symptoms to a faulty idle stepper motor) . I did this a number of times before giving up and then refitted my original ECU (also a W6, obviously). The car is now back running fine as before .
Do you have any idea/s what could be wrong with the chipped ECU? Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
John
P.S. For the record, the chip is the NON-mappable ‘Option 1’ one…

Rejoin the J1 link and run the car like that. If it runs OK then the standard ECU is fine and the problem either lies with the Chip or the way it has been fitted to the main board.
It's normally the later i.e poor solder joint or damaged board when fitting the IC socket.
Also make sure the chip hasn't become dis-lodged slightly in the post and that all the legs are correctly fitting in the IC socket. If it's the one that was for sale onebay a week or so ago...by all account the guy was very happy and only upgraded to an Apexi due to TDo5 20G, 550's etc..etc..... (he emailed me before he sold it to ask to use some of my advert wording).

Yep, yep that's the ebay item I have!
Okay then, first I'll open her up and make sure the chip hasn't dislodged. If that's okay, who do you recommend in the Leics-type area to re-solder the J1 link? Are Roger Clark Motorsport (only circa 2 miles form where I work) knowledagble of this ECU and would they, therefore, know what to do?

the link will either be just cut or removed. if it is the former just try rejoing it by twisting another wire to the bear ends. Or even hold it on while someone else starts the car.
It's only a logic switch that cause the ECU to toggle between maps/running code.

I opened up the unit last night before fitting and I looked at the area where the J1 would be and it looked like it wasn't present(!) although, that said, I didn't properly cross-reference it with your website diagrams. I'll make sure I check it thoroughly tonight and if it's present, I'll do what you say and see what happens. If it's removed, would you be able to help me out? - otherwise I'll have to return it to the seller.
Thing is, even if the J1 link is present and I connect it and the engine runs okay, obviously the actual W6 is fine. Therefore, the IC socket/chip would still need to be checked over and/or resoldered - would you be able to do that for me?

I could read out the chip contents and check the code checksums as expected, but other then that I would only be doing what your doing i.e I would only blag a car off a mate and try and run it up in that (I no longer have a Pre96 car).
By all acounts it was running in the other owners car
I could check the solder joints and fit some wires to the J1 link. I would also run it up in 'said' car if available.
PM me and I can talk you through the options.

PM sent back.
ECU is dead, will not run on or off the chip.
Chip runs fine in another ECU.
Either the ECU died when the 'ebayer' sent it to you or it was 'killed' when they fitted the socket for the Remapped Chip.

Hi Scott
Fitted it about an hour ago and everything seems to be working just so! .
The ECU is providing a rock-steady idle and feels great. The turbo's certainly producing the full 1.1 bar of boost, according to the gauge .
Question: Would the chip have fully learnt it's optimum settings for the ignition advance, fueling and boost on a couple of brief run-ups through the gears? Or would I need to perform a few blats over a few days to allow the chip to 'dial in' satisfactorally?
Thanks for everything,
John.
