Default FMIC question

My mate has a Pace intercooler for an early impreza with which the piping doesn't go through the wing area but is contained entirely in the engine bay.

Pace Products | Products

This comes with a different radiator though .

Why do other manufacurers piping go throught he wing area (is it because of the standard radiator)?
I ask simply because i wouldn't mind getting FMIC but don't really want to cut the car to bits to get 1 fitted and not too sure whether fitting a larger TMIC is worth it.

Car is a 93WRX

Because you keep the standard radiator and it's fairly straightforward to fit a 'normal' FMIC kit. Plus they are dirt cheap, which the Pace one isn't. You can pick up a decent Autobahn 88 FMIC kit for £200 nowadays.

dont let FRAYZ hear you say that LOL

personally I would spend a little extra and get a better quality FMIC that does the job it's s'posed to do.

there are loads of dicussions on here about FMIC's, spent a little time reading them mate and draw your own conclusions.

The pipework on the Pace one must be shorter too. This must be better surely?

That's a fair point but it's not the quality that i'm questioning though (i guess Frayz has something to say about the Autobahn fmics) it's just that i don't really want to cut the hell out of my car (if i do fit 1 that is, as i'm only aiming for 300bhp)

I'm just wondering if it's simpler to get a good fmic core then make up my own pipework so i don't have to cut the car.

I'm definately not spending that much on a FM (£1000 is just a tad expensive)just using their pipework as an example of why they do it and not other companies.

If your only gunning for 300bhp then why not get an uprated top mount if you dont want to cut your bumper?

you can get some really good ones that would handle upwards of 300 if you decided to take it further, or you could look at getting an STi or similar TMIC and modding it to fit

I have an V4 STi top mount for sale

Cutting the bumper i don't mind it's a bit of plastic, it's just that most people i've spoken to say you have to 'lose' a bit of metal from the drivers side area (that i'm not particularly keen on ).

My mate had a v5 sti tmic fitted and that tbh seemed to involve a lot more hacking (stuff on the firewall and the throttle body i think and i don't think it looked nice) plus a better tmic, i think, needs a better scoop and as you say if i go further the fmic would most probably be better.

(thanks for the offer though ).

No worries dude

I have never heard of this loosing a bit of metal thing, I have just this morning received my Hybrid FMIC and hope to fit it this weekend (wife permitting), my car is a MY98 so is slightly different from yours under the bonnet but I should think the main metal work at the front is the same, I will let you know how I get on

Had a look on flat4online and all the fmic and pipework are the same for all the classics but it seems pre96 classics need the turbo outlet pipe shortening to stop any fouling on the throttle body and the inner wing need to be cut

Ive fitted a fmic to my 93 wrx the pipework on the drivers side passed through the inner wing with very little cutting and on the passenger side it sits just beside the bottom rad hose I did have to modify the intercooler outlet pipework to bypass the oil filler neck but I think think thats just because of the kit I bought a quick cut of the pipe and an additional samco hose sorted it I just needed a little more flexibility in the pipework

i have also got a 93 wrx import and fitted my fmic last week. theres is kinda alot of stuff that needs to be cut and bent on the car to get it to fit. sounds really nice afterwards though and seems to be working great. i got mine from ebay 2fast2furious does alot of impreza stuff. the pipes needed some cutting but i picked up some more silicone for £5 and job done. if you need any help then send me a message.
