The Performance Drivers cage is an excellent bit of kit, but isn't needed on an 01, which has a built in cage.

Does that mean it has points to attach harnesses as well, or do I need to replace the seat? (Hint, the answer I'm looking for does *not* involve seat replacement...)

 

I should add that harnesses + standard seats (such as Mellow's) are ok where the rear belts are near horizontal when attached to a cage, because any webbing load in an accident is a fore and aft pull not vertical and will not bear down on the seat back.

If the harnesses are attached to the OEM belt mounts at the rear however, with standard seats, this is not recommended.

 

OK, thanks for the replies chaps. I'm going to make some enquiries about the possibility of fitting suitable reinforcements to the rear parcel shelf and then attaching eyebolts for clip-in harnesses there.

Dedicated competition seats are out for me - I don't use the car for that sort of thing often enough to justify it - but I *do* want the harnesses for the inevitable "Oh Sh*t" moment that will come with three or for Nurburgring trips every year

Putting harnesses in a MY01 is not terribly easy, i'm gonna answer your email this weekend

*hint* - standard seats are not designed to stand a vertical load such as that resulting from an accident where harnesses are fitted.

With a standard lap and diagonal belt, the seat does not take any direct vertical load from the belt in an accident. With harnesses in an accident, and the movement of the driver being thrown forward, will result in huge downward load on the seat back which is likely to collapse. This will result in the driver being highly likely to be put through the windscreen.

If you study the anchorage points and leverage involved between OEM belts and harnesses you will understand what I mean.

Competition seats are designed to prevent this by being designed to withstand huge loads in a vertical plane.
