Default Battery light

Apart from the Impreza I have a peugeot 106 diesel 1.5 normally aspirated.

Recently the battery light started to come on and I have noticed that if I rev the engine it goes out but when the revs settle it comes back on.

Clear symptoms for a simple problem but I've no idea what it is.

Can anyone help?

Slack alternator belt, poor voltage signal to the regulator or regualtor FUBAR.

My Old Pug diesel though wouldn't put the light out until I revved it a little after start, then would be fine for the whole trip, that lasted 4 years like that, then my SEAT Diesel did the same for the next 3!

what ever it is,
the battery drained completely today.
I jumped started it using leads and its runs but I have no indicators wipers etc at first then when I try them again they work then die out.

Where is the alternator on the pug located.

A new alternator is £140 and a used froma breakers £40.

I'll try tightnening the belt first.

If that fails what should i do next.

You really need to be checking the charge rate, And for resistance of the leads to check you have a good connection. If there the silly tighten up by hand thingys the french sometimes use then they often dont make a good connection. If the charge rate is good at battery and youve checked for drain using the same mutimetre in the amps position the the next step would be a battery check

No charge left in battery according to meter. All leads off alternator are intact. belt is tight too.
