Default Oil change!

Hi all. I have done a search on this but couldn't find anything.
I have just changed the oil and filter on MY2000 UK turbo, and the oil smelt a bit like petrol. Not really strong but you could definately smell it? Oil has done about 8-9000 miles (OK OK I forgot to change it)....Any thoughts or ideas if this is normal?
Thanks in advance

After that mileage there will be some dilution of the oil with the by-products of combustion and the oil will no longer have the new oil smell. Do you do a lot of short journeys? Oil usually takes a good 5 miles or so, to reach a reasonable working temperature (80-90c) and needs to stay there for a while to evaporate some of the contamination.
If the car's running ok with no oil burning or misfiring, it's probably fine. If you're journeys are short, change the oil more frequently.

My oil definately smells of petrol also. It was changed back at 52K, now on 55K. I've done quite a few short journeys but nothing where the engine has been shut off before hot. Car isn't used alot at present and so twice a week is brought out of the garage and left to idle. Shut off after 10 mins or so. Oil is a turning black slowly. Will change within the next 2K.

Thanks John! You hit the nail on the head I do, do a lot of shrt journeys but car is warmed and cooled. Car runs really well, I have never had a problem, so my mind is at ease. I would usually change oil every 4-5K but forgot this time. I only use either Millers when Zen service it or if I change the oil Silkolene Pro.

Thanks for replying

3000 miles time for a fresh drink of millers finest oil. 8-9000 miles your car not mine!

Running the engine at idle for 10 mins at a time will never get the oil anywhere near working temperature. I think you're doing more harm than good as doing this will increase oil contamination. Like I said in post 3, you need to drive at normal speeds for a good 4-5 miles before the oil reaches an ideal working temperature (80-90c) and contaminates evaporate. The water temp. gauge is not a good indicator of actual oil temp.
Try to run the car for 10 miles or so every couple of weeks?
