Default MY99/00 MAF/engine probs

Hi, i used to have a MY99 and suffered the good old MAF failure and engine failure

i am know looking at getting another but am put off with the probs mentioned above, what can be done to stop this problem, is it just a case of replacing the MAF every 12/6months??? i know not to run ind kits etc but there seems to be loads of engines going pop and i dont want to buy another if the same has a good chance of happening!

any info and opinions welcome!

Change the MAF as at the maximum an annual event, otherwise should be fine. They seem to last around 70K miles but some go as low as 30K.

You can generally tell when they are on there way out, trying to stall, erractic idle etc

they are only about 75 quid from a main dealer anyway

i think one of the problems is that people will still drive the car at full boost, or WOT etc when the MAF starts to play up which as we know can cause an engine to go bang

I drove my car for a short while knowing the MAF was on its way out, but was extra cautious till I got my new MAF (the one I did have ready to go in the car got stolen when my garage got burgled)

I've got a UK MY99 and the MAF went a while ago, but as Sonic says my car had problems idling etc and I must have driven the car for at least two weeks before I got the replacement MAF on, and a I was told on here at the time, I stayed off boost and all was fine, shes running great now with over 100k on the clock...touch wood lol

The BEST advice is advice given from hard experience I am sure you would agree?

My experience of my MY00 MAF is that it has given me not one bit of trouble for 7 1/2 years and 80,000 miles ....... I put that down, firmly, to the fact that I haven't messed around at all with the Induction side of the car.

You know jack about Moderating, as we all know, that doesn't stop you attempting to do it properly

Bought my car at 80K miles, absolutely stock no mods FSSH, and it had had a MAF within the previous 6 months (based on the moulded in build date), oiled filters etc can cause a much earlier failure, the later Bosch ones are meant to be a lot better, and SOME can be resurrected by GENTLE cleaning with white spirit on a cotton bud to remove any baked on residues.

Now then Pete.

The MY00 has a different MAF to the MY99, as is the ECU.

As for messing with the induction on an MY99. Not all hads problems, my kit was fitted for me by my local dealership, who supplied it as well.
I had an MY99 with a Pipercross wet then a dry induction kit, had it on for some 40K (60K) on the MAF, not a problems at all.

Other stock MY99's have had MAF failures as well, the MAF's where a weakpoint on this model and advising peope to change it on a yearly basis is good preventative/proactive advice - IMHO

There are all sorts of theories as to why the MAF's pop. improper oiling of the filters, vibration/poor fitting of the ind kit, rubbish kits/poor filtration, etc. In the end Subaru changed the type on the MY00 models, likely to be because the MY99 MAF was a POS, probably a cheaper model used to save IM money, who knows, it backfired when they went wrong under warranty.

Yep - my hard experience tells me that if you don't treat the MAF like a consumable item, then your engine may die - as happened to me. I was still running the same airbox as standard too.

At the end of the day, there is a problem that has been identified and the best advice you can give someone is to be cautious, not hasn't happened to me so its OK

Thought you had a Sport anyway?

No, you miss the point ...... I am a Sport is what you probably heard, not that I have a Sport

And I wonder just how big this MAF problem really is? I would suspect that, outside of ScoobyNet and it's modifiers, there are millions of MAFs still going well after many, many years and many, many miles ......

Yes, give advice to look out for the tell tale signs of a failing MAF ...... but, to suggest that an annual change is good advice is - as you know - complete and utter **** tosh!

Agreed, the MAF is a known weakspot on the MY99's - best to be pro-active as the alternative is serious ££££'s
