Exhaust too loud!
Just got a straight through 3" system on my 94 WRX, and it's ear blistering loud, one of the loudest cars I've ever heard on the road, unbelievable!!!!
But Its too loud, and I think... it's slower than it was with my old system. which was 2.5" with rear silencer.
Opinions?

could very well be slower.
With a bigger diameter pipework, exhaust gases will flow faster. You would think that this is good, however in the case of turbocharged cars you need a bit of back pressure to help with the low down torque.
Is the car modified in any other way? If not then you are probably better sticking to the 2.5" as this I think (from reading on here) will only become restrictive at high 300bhp levels.
Just double check for leaks though especially with it being a lot louder as it may be blowing somewhere.

The same volume of gas passing through a larger pipe will flow slower!
Without re-mapping to suit, you could well be loosing power - more likely torque. A certain amount of back pressure is needed to aid scavenging.
You've proved the point that noise does not always mean power! (wish a few more people would realise that?)

The Revolution 3 inch is very good and not too loud, in fact it is a little quiet for some people.
I don't think it is any louder than the last exhaust I had which was the Scoobyworld Racebox 2.5 inch cat back!

A few urban myths on here.
On a turbo charged car you want as little restriction as possible POST turbo. The turbo is restrictive in its own right, also to help spool characteristics the pipe diameter PRE turbo is critical, as is the mapping

Surely you need some back pressure to stop the turbo over spooling?
I know on the Supra's if you de-cat the car you need to fit restrictor rings into the exhaust to stop the car over boosting and ripping itself to bits. Having removed the blockage of the cat you need to put in a new blockage!
Anyone?

Mate,
Ive got the same thing.
Ive got a 3" bore turbo to jap style backbox exhaust with no restrictions and day to day its a bit too loud, although when driven hard it does sound like Colin Mc. Rae in his hey day
At the mo im either looking to buy a backbox with a bit more sound deadening or im gonna buy a resonator and have it welded in the middle of the centre section.
Anyone have any ideas on what would be best? resonator or backbox?

A turbo is driven by exhaust gases, so if you have a slower flow exhaust side (bigger diameter pipework), then the turbo will spin slower initially (basically a lag effect) so you will loose torque low down.
I agree with you on the remap side of things though
