Default Failing MAF??????????

O.K chaps car running crap, lumpy idle, hesitation etc, replaced plugs coil packs all tested and o.k, unplugged MAF engine cut out tried to keep running though, left the MAF unplugged car started o.k runs worse than when connected but only slightly
Runs a bit better with the MAF connected but still crap!

Any Ideas?
Should the car start and run without MAF connected?
Appreciate this has been done to death so sorry!

My 99 wagon would cut out when l unpluged MAF sensor despite the fact the MAF was knackered. Hesitation and missing on boost are signs of a dodgy MAF.

Thanks guy's the MAF test seems a bit hit and miss to me!
The car goes o.k on boost but does have flat spots and hesitation and the knocklink does flash wildly for the odd moment, seems to me it could be MAF would explain the possible leaning out on boost!

If i get a new one does it have to be exactly the same as the old one, mine is a green label one, would any green label one work?

Just get one for your MY it'll be fine.

If its an MY99/00 they are about £75 earlier classics cost bloody loads more but are tougher

Thanks for all your help guy's it was after all the messing about changing plugs and checking coil packs it turned out to be the MAF SENSOR
Managed to get one for £30 and it works perfectly!
