Default Mechanical KPH to MPH converters

When I first imported my car I had a little yellow and black mechanical converter box, which was nice After the third gearbox change (gotta stay off them 4wd starts ) I misplaced it and have been running around in KM, but grew tired of the limiter and ordered a new converter from ebay. The new converter is a black cylinder and fits in the same way. It has a male and female end so can only go in one way, and the ebay ad says it fits all cable impreza's? But when I fitted it today and got up to 30mph/50kmh the speedo reads 80 like its in backwards? Anyway, Ive emailed the bloke and he says it may be faulty and will replace it but im not so sure? Has anyone on here used the black cylinder type before? And can anyone point me in the direction to get hold of a decent converter online preferably?

Thanks in advance
