The ecu's on these cars can't be re-mapped...the ecu needs to be changed for a mappable item.

I have the same car, and have bought an apex'i ecu (£350 shipped from nengun.com, + £250 - 300 to get it mapped) in order to get my car re-mapped.

The ECU's on pre 1999 cars can now be remapped using an ESL board but this costs in the region of £550-600.

....In which case, given the price similarity, the A'pexi is a much better option.

Don't agree. With the ESL type chip the ECU keeps all its original features. There are more pro's than con's with the ESL. Scott.T and Andy Stevens would be the guys to ask IMHO..

I have the old type ESL chip which is ace..

The problem is with Apexis (93-96) is that they are now or going to be only avaliable from authorised Apexi dealers so companies like Nengun may not get hold of them.
PolarPerformance is worth checking as they noe offer the ESL remapping even Bob Rawle offers them.

the new ESL boards are very good.. dealers soon to go on their website I believe. Myself included.

Apexi powerFc for early car (93~96) are only available via authorised dealers as mentioned.. i have two in stock

with what is available there is really no point going to piggyback..

the ESL board and software is a lovely bit of kit.

Would personally go with the Apexi option if you can lay your hands on one , either that or have a chat with Steve Simpson at TEG about the Simtek ecu..

not wanting to start an argument but have you tried the new ESL board to make a judgement on it?

If facelifted (post Sept 96) then I'd also recommend an Apexi (for now)

Apexi ECU including hand controller from nengun.com....£350 delivered, plus mapping.

£6-650 all in.

I have one sitting on my desk that I got from nengun, waiting for my front mount to arrive from the group-buy before I get it fitted.

The only function it doesn't have is knock control, i.e. it won't pull timing when it detects knock - but it will tell you about it. If the car is mapped properly and consistently run on the fuel it was mapped on, this shouldn't be an issue. Andy Forrest doesn't run two of them on his drag car for nothing....

You cant get GC8 pre 96 Apexis from Nengun anymore, message on their website:

Apexi Power FC 414-AF001 Subaru - WRX - Ver1,2 92/11-96/8 No Longer in Production

The Apexi is a capable ECU at a very good price, I'm not disputing that.

According to the sidc faq the facelift was from Sept 96.
The code on the VIN (according to the sidc faq) is GC8D4DD may be worth having a look just to check.
