Default Lambda sensor is it ok to run it disconnected?

Hi all, first thread. My scoobys idle was up and down today and wouldn't settle.. I unplugged the lambda sensor and it idled properly again and on a quick spin round the block it ran smoother and pulled harder... I just wanna know is it ok to run with te sensor disconnected? or will I damage my engine?
My car is totally decatted so do I need the sensor? Please help!
