Default Advice on Turbo

I have a MY94 UK turbo wagon on an N plate and the turbo oil seals have started to give way so its definatly on the way out and time to be replaced

I was under the impression from reading on here that all UK wagons were fitted with the TD05? but after checking the shaft for play this afternoon i noticed it has a VF12 fitted instead.

Now the advice im in need of is what turbo can i replace this with instead of another VF12, without the need for having the car remapped as im slightly low on funds at the moment?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You are correct it should be a TD05.. probably been replaced before, or you have a legacy engine fitted. . seen that a few times.. do the coil packs have a single bolt or two holding then in?

Best to replace with a TD05.

How many bolts should they have (i've a 93 wrx with an IHI turbo as well).

i'll check the coilpacks tomorrow, i'd also like to know how many bolts it should have?

if replacing with a TD05 should it need a remap or would it be safe as is seeing as thats what its meant to have?

legacy engine has 2 bolts on coil packs.. impreza has 1..

It is also possible that the very early cars were fitted with left over legacy bits from the factory.. although I don't think there have been ecu maps found which doesn't resemble the same td05 turbo except the jdm wagon with it's td04

safe as the map in the ecu will be for that turbo..

checked coilpacks today and there held in with only 1 bolt so looks like its an impreza engine with legacy turbo, so i'll get a TD05 and all will hopefully be back to standard.

Thanks again for the feedback on this matter, its good to know your all such a helpful bunch for when something goes wrong in the future

Can anyone explain this for me please and give a definative answer on remap or not as its confusing the hell out of me

Dear Mitch

I have checked with my data - I can't find the TD05 turbo from the Impreza.... I did hear TD05 come with Impreza 2.0 Turbo as well. So far In my data :



It only show VF12 for UK Impreza Turbo early model.

I know TD05 is much more power in the top end also turbo kick in much later than VF12.

If you would like to change turbo from VF12 to TD05 - I will advise to get it map it again as well.

Well if it helps interpret your data, the MY98 WRX wagon had a TD04.

I'm assuming that with it being an earlier model and having the vf12 as standard as oppose to the td05 i should either get it remaped to suit the mods or get a 95> ecu which has the correct map for that turbo?

As JGM says, the map in the ECU needs to match the turbo, and if it had a VF12 turbo then it's liklely it had a VF12 map in the ECU. The ECU from that generation were not mappable ( hence Scooby ECU adaptor boards and the like ) so it would have to be a factory map AFAIK.
So fitting a TD05 ( more airflow ) would need fuelling etc. matching to the turbo hence re-mapping.

Now, I didn't think Impreza turbos were UK models until later than 1994 ... and the Jap import wagons ( like mine ) from 94/95 were TD04 equipped.


The early UK turbos came with TD05's but lag and low RPM boost performance meant that Subaru put smaller TD04's on them, IIRC.

i thought td05's were fitted to the import saloons with tdo4's being fitted to the wagons .

Its a MY94 uk wagon first registerd on 01/12/1995.

I think what i'll do is pick up an ecu from a wagon that has the TD05 as standard, surely this would just be plug and play?

Yes ecu will be plug and play.. it is possible your own ecu has a td05 map on already but reading the map off it is not massively easy to get done..

You could just buy a td05 ecu (doesn't need to be wagon).. and plug it in or get a chip for the one you have.. but probably complicating the matter further.

I understand what you're saying guys to a point where im comfortable to go ahead with what i feel needs doing. (td05 + ecu)

I must admit was more than a little worried when i saw the vf12 unit looking up at me wondering what the hell was going on with the engine. Especially with all info on here saying its meant to be a td05 unit. Just glad its nice and clear now and hopefully can help someone else out with a similar problem.

Not wanting to confuse, but didn't some STi models have VF series turbos fitted, although maybe not VF12's ...

not the phase 1 upto 96 no.. the list posted above already lists the VF's fitted to the WRX and STi's fitted to the later cars.. not that I have checked it is correct as we have been concerntrating on the phase 1.
VF12 is a very small turbo and not fitted to STi.

Ive purchased the turbo today so now left looking for a replacement ecu, any advice on this would be great for example, would an import ecu work, what models have a td05 as standard, ecu code, could i use an sti ecu without any issues etc... hoping to get hold on one by middle of next week.

I've seen VF12 on Legacys, I suspect it was retro fitted to the Impreza. Standard ECus to consider are the 6K followed by the Z4. I wouldn't bother with anything else.

i've also been told a 7D will work fine with no problems, is this true? this is the messsage i was sent-

mine had a td05, & was working great with no probs. but most early 96 m/n did have td04, to which it also worked fine. i have 2 of these, the other is in my car & i still use a td05

If you want 208bhp, the 7D will fit the bill.

The advice you were given by pm is poor, the only pre 96 cars to have td04s are import wrx wagons.

Having re-read it, the advice is extremely poor, a 7D ecu should not be used in conjunction with a td04.
