the MAF ( AFM ) on your car is fairly robust..

have you tried resetting the ecu? this should clear the code which is stored hence why the light is off but you still have the error code coming up.

If you reset the ecu and the error code returns then it is likely to be faulty.

just used my sti going to work and suddenly CEL came on and halfway to work it came off. But the car was jerking madly when revs. Could this be a sign that the AFM is really on its way out?

Does sound like a MAF problem

Have you managed to reset the ECU as Simon suggested?
Is the code still showing?

If it were mine I'd be taking it in to get it looked at rather than worrying about it going bang - Try to drive off boost if you have to drive the car

There's loads on here about MAF's with advice from people far wiser than me - just run a search and you'll be overloaded with usefull advice
