Default Crankshaft worn?

Hi guys. I would appreciate some advice please. I've just had my crankshaft pulley replaced for the second time as it was shaking all over the place. When we took the old pulley off we noticed the woodruff key had gouged out a much bigger hole in the pulley and the last 1cm of the crankshaft looked diagonally worn. We put a new pulley on but used the same woodruff key that was on there as we didn't want to take the rad etc out. The pulley seems to run straightish but I've noticed that the car can be quite lumpy and hesitant. When its booted its fine, but driving sedately is when the problems arise. I'm just about to buy a house and need to sell the scoob and I don't want to sell it on to someone if there is a problem. Could the crank be causing this trouble? Do you think if we stripped it down and put a new woodruff key on it and pulley the probs will go? Or has the crank had it and the dreaded rebuild is needed? Its an Sti version 3 96'. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Can you post any pics of the pulley / shaft? ... Im just thinking it sounds like a problem with the pulley not made correctly ... as I have seen pulleys before that are not turned correct ..

If you can add a pic I can tell you

The pulley was fine. It was second hand but ok. I'm just concerned why it keeps happening. As long as the pulley sits ok on the crank and runs straight it should be ok shouldn't it? I've been looking on your website and if the car justs requires a new pulley I might be interested in your lightweight version as hopefully it will put less stress on the crankshaft. What sort of deal could you offer me because there are plenty available on the internet?

Hi ,

Yes Im not trying to sell you a new one for no reason,

Just saying that there are a lot of crap ones floating about on ebay that I have seen , the vee's are not turned to the rigt depth and they run out a mile, and are also made with a crap material

But Like you say if it runs true it should be ok,

Have a look around , see what you fancy and i'll do you a good deal..

Cheers chris

Hi again Chris. My only concern is the crankshaft itself. As it does seem to be worn if you look down on it from above. i.e, you can see the bottom part of the crank sticks out a bit further than the top, if that makes sense? I will post a pic when the old pulley comes off. How much crankshaft wear can you get away with?
