Default ECU fault code 23

Hi, I have a 1995 UK Impreza turbo, with a full Miltec Sport exhaust system and K&N induction kit fitted. I recenty noticed an increase in fuel consumption so I reset the ECU and it then reported no faults. I have now driven the car for about 50 miles with the fuel consumption looking better but upon checking the ECU for any reported faults it is now showing a code 23 fault. Does anyone know what this fault code means please

23 Mass Air Flow Sensor Circuit, that is what is listed. I would be very careful with your car, as the reason you are probably getting better fuel consumption is due to the car running lean. Get the maf sensor checked asap!

Ok, is there an easy way to check a MAF sensor??, or anywhere around the Cambridge area that you recomend that could check the MAF for me. Would it simply be best to replace it rather than risk destroying an engine.

If you unplug the maf and the engine stays running then it is faulty. It would be best to replace the maf, than take any chances with your engine.

I have unplugged the MAF with the car running and the engine stopped straight away..... does this mean that the sensor is still ok and I should be looking somewhere else????

Doesn't mean nothing, had 2 MAF's go on me and the engine died as soon as it was unplugged but it was the MAF's that were gone.

Personally i would get a second opinion from a decent garage, that knows there way around subarus and in the meantime drive the car very gently.

I have now changed the MAF and reset the ECU, but I am still geting the fault code 23 , could having an induction kit on cause the MAF to show a fault. Is it worth putting the standard air box back on or does anyone else have any ideas what I should be looking at????????????
