Default Boost problem ?

My '96 WRX doesn't seem to be boosting as it did. Set on 1.0 or 1.2 bar it seems fine but set at 1.4 it seems strange. Seems like the boost is surging up/down and it doesn't always reach 1.4 bar, usually around 1.1-1.25ish.

Here's my spec:

hks ssq blow off valve
tdo5 turbo converted to front entry
GT SPEC GEN II ceramic coated headers & upipe
550cc injectors.
hybrid FMIC
Pipercross induction kit
Greddy s/s catch can
apexi power fc mapped my pavlo(Paul@Zen performance)
apexi power fc commander.
apexi power fc boost controller.
sx fuel pressure regulator.
walbro 255 fuel pump.
straight through s/s exhaust, hayward and scott.

Any ideas ??

you might need a 3 bar map sensor, as a standard one will only let you boost to around 1.1, you would never need to go more than 3 bar unless you spend a sh@t load, phil.

Where's the map sensor and how do I tell if it's standard or not ?

When the boost surges,as I have a pipercross filter I can hear the turbo sucking loudly, the boost goes up/down up/down up/down etc but set at 1.2 bar it's fine.

he has an Apexi boost controller fitted so no need.

Sounds like you have an intercooler pipe leak.. check all the pipes are on and tight.. nit just that the jubilee is tightenned as sometimes they lock but are not tight on the pipe.

Ok I will check them over and make sure they are tight. Funny you should mention that as i've only noticed this problem since the car went to API,they removed all the I/C pipework when they changed my cambelt/seals etc.

I currently have the same problem on my 1993 WRX. Its definately a leak on my FMIC somewhere as I can hear is wistling on full bosst and the boost needle moves around a bit. Ive tightened the jubilee's up fully but something went wrong on one of them as it tightened and the clicked andbecame loose again. It now will not tighten fully. Heard you can buy some mikalor clips which are far better which is what I will be doing.

Checked all the clips on my I/C pipework earlier and everyone one of them was very loose ! That's another black mark against Api from me unfortunately !
Car now boosts to 1.4 easily and holds it

glad it is sorted and was a simple fix..

to be fair they do tend to settle a little sometimes and could have been tight when fitted..
