Default Cleaning MAF sensor

I have a slight 'pulsing' feel to the engine as I am traveling at low revs between 1500rpm and 2500rpm, the power seems to be on and off, not really obviously as passengers cant really feel it, but as the driver you do notice these things. I think I read a thread a while ago suggesting the Maf senosr may be dirty and to clean it. If this is true which part of the sensor needs the cleaning, and what substance should I use to clean it, thanks

Gaz

Hi there, try a search on MAF's ther has ben a lot said about them on here. Which year car is yours. the MY99 had a particularly weak (for want of a better word) MAF.

Good luck

Will only need cleaning if you have an aftermarket filter - especially steel mesh or foam type.

Compressed air.
or Brake cleaner

Carburettor cleaner is a bit of a no-no as it melts the outer casing

Also make strong note of Paul's advice, above; as the consequence is melted pistons or overloaded bearings from detonation if the car is used hard with a semi-failing sensor for a prolonged period.

its a 1995, but there is no aftermarket filter fitted? so does this suggest a different fault and not the MAF

hi i have a my00 classic and threads like this always worry me, i have a bit of hesitation sometimes especially when running on vpower so has anyone got details on how to clean the maf or the cheapest solution to get a new one, also with the maf being weak on the 99/00 cars surely there has been a fix/upgrade ie. will and older maf be better/compatible.. Cheers Justin..

Hi Justin,
I ran a MY99 with a Pipercross wet aftermarket filter on it for 60K miles with no problems with the MAF.
Other peple with MY99's have done the same and had melted pistons and allsort of problems.

Ther are all sorts of theories on this, could be bad fiting, vibration, por filtration, over oiling, etc.

It does seem to be MY99's that have the most problems with a different MAF to other years and i believe the MY00 is not the same as the MY99 although who is to say that is definately the case and that MY99 parts where not used up on MY00's.

If it does fail then you could be liable for a BIG bill amnd not worth the risk, get it checked and or changed if in doubt. Not sure if any other makes/years MAF's fit, do do a search.

This has been talked about ever since i joined SN in '99
