Default Searching for a cam sensor

Forgive my ignorance, I have tried the hallowed search button but cannot find the right answer.

I am just about to buy an 02 WRX which is in need of a cam sensor. I believe Subaru want about £104 for the part, but have seen mention of people buying an alternatively sourced part for half the price, but cant find anywhere which sells such things.

Any pointers gratefully accepted.

Bugeye's are well known for throwing spurious CELS relating to problems with the camshaft position sensor

Are you 100% certain it needs a new sensor ?

Aaaah I need to do some more reading, CELS ? Wassat then?

The current owner has had it on diagnostics at Subaru who advised the fault was the sensor. Not sure how trustworthy the Subaru stealers are, but he was quoted 160 to rectify it, with a replacement sensor.

Im new to all this so aint got a clue.

CEL = Check Engine Light, the orange warning light on the dash shaped like an engine

If the ECU "thinks" thee is something wrong with the car then it lights up and stored a code within the ECU. Subaru can read the code off the ECU and try and work out what the problem might be

The MY02 ECU has a habit of lighting up the CEL and storing codes for no apparant reason. Sometimes a dicky neutral position switch can cause all sorts of eror codes to come up, usually a misfire on cylinder 3 !!

The problem I am referring to is that the ECU sometimes thinks there is a problem with the camshaft position sensor circuit when there isn't. Mine lights up on occasions in 2nd or 3rd Gear at high revs. Goes away again after 4 or 5 starts or I can clear the CEL.

AFAIK the sensor has no moving parts so I'm not sure what can go wrong apart from getting dirty !!

Hopefully the usual Bugeye crew (Butty, Neilo, Ninnybobs, WRX Rich etc) will be along shortly to help

my 02 goes through stages .... can thow the cell for the cam every other day , then i don't see it for a few months

i have swapped etc but makes no difference - i thought about trying to space the sensor out more but never got round to it

if the cam sensor was screwed the car would not start - search for anul oil change

Wicked, cheers guys. Thanks for all the info. Will see how it goes before wasting any money on one, but will prob end up getting a new one at some point when I get a service sorted.

Hopefully I will be about a lot more, complaining about scooby ownership, moaning about fuel consumption, and reposting old questions.

Im sure I will have a whole host of questions and research to do by sunday.

Thanks again.
