Urgent help needed please, my 94 WRX Import has failed on emissions due to a faulty cat and when i rang Europarts, they said that there are 2 cats:

1st one at £462 excluding VAT!!!!!
2nd one at £346 excluding VAT!!!!

I aint got this sort of money but read a thread on here 'MOT strife on emmissions' which had a link to the VOSA website with an explanation that pre 95 imports do not need cats (due to the model not being on their systems or summat). The link is down and i need the info ASAP, does anyone have the info from the VOSA site, please??????????????

There always on ebay mate! theres a cat in the down pipe and one in the centre pipe.

Ah, apparently VOSA car model database is updated regularly and my car could be now added, which is why it cannot go through a no cat test

.........However.........

There were 2 fast idle tests done

1) CO 0.84% (fail as gotta be <0.3%)
HC 53 (pass as less than 200)
Lambda 0.97 (pass as 0.97-1.03)

2) CO 1.54%
HC 107
Lambda 0.95

Someone said that this is a lambda sensor fault, the garage said it was cat ?

Who is right here? And what's the damage (in terms of cost)?

my 93 import didnt need a cat test as ive had both mine taken off. where u from as i still got the original down pipe cat

I'm in Newcastle mate, poss deal to be done however i'll find out which one it is then i'll be in touch, either way i'll know in the next week.

By 'which one' i mean Lambda or CAT

Whats it say on the V5 Rory (make, model etc)? The test that you take can depend on that...

If you do have to take it then make sure that the cat is as hot as you can get it and see that the car is tested at the upper end of the allowable rev-range. If it fails below but passes at just over 3000rpm then Id suspect the lambda as the stsem only runs a closed-loop <3000rpm.

Just taken off what i believe is the lambda sensor connector (gray 4 pin connector on the lower left side of the coolant expansion tank) as per Zen performance instructions (over the phone) and connected a voltage multitester between the white wire and ground (-ve battery terminal) and got nowt showing, is the lambda knackered then?

Didn't show any CEL light which is even stranger. Could the ECU be knackered?

Its a Subaru Imprexa WRX registered 30/09/94, the MOT tester guy was revving the t*ts out of it (circa 5k revs) when i was watching him just before the test, hmm tricky

I was under the impression that any 1994 WRX should take the pre-cat test actually, ie: Co2 <=3.5%. Surely an acceptable limit cant ever be established for a car that wasnt ever type-approved?

I realise that using the computerised system testers shouldnt make mistakes however..... The last relevant car that I MOTd was in July (2006). It was an unregistered 1995 Impreza (manufactured/used before August 1995 too). Even though this car wasnt registered and there certainly want an exact match (as required) the system prompted a cat test.....

Perhaps the testers werent aware of the correct testing procedure for your car?

Tested lambda when warm,

Got 0.4v on tickover, static (no oscillation)

Got 0.2v when revved

Is this broken?
