disconnect the oxygen sensor, then try
surging is caused by fuel mix correction applied after reading the oxygen sensor signal. very common on MY99/00 cars, you just have to live with it.
Some fuels are better then others at damping this out, due to their different burn.
I found Optimax to be the worst for surge and Esso SUL to be better.

Hey guys, I have a very similar problem and was just wondering why you say you have just gotta live with it? Get a new sensor and sort it out surely? Why do you have to just live with it, can't it be fixed? I'm new to scoobies btw, I only got mine about a month ago lol, so you'll have to excuse me if I'm being stupid here!

i know what you mean. but i think what thay are trying to say is its a subaru fault all cars have problems ie bad gear change too poor headlights i have spent lots of money on my car most of that is servicing every 5000miles. changed most of the sensors the plugs and leads. i could go on and on but i still have a problem which i hope is something i have missed anyway all the best with your new scoob. hope i have not put you off
