Default Petrol leak from fuel pressure regulator...help!

Just finished putting my engine bay back together after changing the inlet pipe and refitting the manifold, and it idles successfully, which is a good start at least.

One big problem though - the fuel pressure regulator is leaking out of the joint with the end of the fuel rail. Now when I had the manifold off, I did have to manouevre the fuel rails and pipes around a lot, and in the process did have the regulator off. The O-ring looked fine and it went back in afterwards nice and snug. I tightened up the two bolts on the reg as hand-tight as I could with a spanner but not to the point where you can feel threads stripping or anything...

So is it one of those things where you need to replace the O-ring every time you disturb the regulator? Or have I done the bolts up too tight, or not tight enough? If it is just an O-ring that's needed, will any rubber O-ring do if it's the right size? Or does it have to be a special fancy one for fuel?

Normally I'd just garage it and tackle it after Christmas, but the car needs to be ready to visit the inlaws tomorrow! HELP!

Remove, and inspect the o ring. They can get caught especially if you don't grease them before re-fitting.

DO NOT try, and BODGE it, if the o ring is no good. The reg' is too close to the exhaust to take a chance on it failing whilst driving !.

Any O ring is not suitable, needs to be in the right material and the right size, then as Mark says.

Can't believe that after putting most of the engine bay back in place, I had to take half of it off again to get at the regulator. The old one was fairly hard and had a small chunk out of it. Anyway, after finding a very close match of O-ring, I fitted it and it went in nicely - this time taking a bit more care over sliding it in straight. Only problem is it may or may not be the right kind of rubber for a fuel system.

But anyway, it idles and runs with no leaks whatsoever, but what a pain in the **** of a job! I'll get the proper replacement O-ring from Subaru as soon as they're open after Christmas, but it should do - and in the meantime if I smell petrol I'll pull over!
