Default Flywheel pros and cons

Hi guys,

what are the pros and cons of a lightened flywheel?

can you go too light?

does it all depend on engine mods?

What would be the best weight to look for for a mildy tuned '93 wrx?

An exedy one or a RCM one. Think both are bout 5.5kg.

No difference in driving it clutch feel wise. But excellent torque increase.

To light can effect the idle as there is less inertia in the rotating assembly to keep it idling smoothly, also launches can be harder for the same reason. Pros are that the lighterweight allows the engine to spin up quicker.

Wouldn't go any lighter than 4.5kg, but that'll be a billet item, as the OEM ones are cast iron and if you try and take them lower than 7kg it could shatter.

@jim litten Obviously you have not got one in your car or never had. I had both with a AP racing organic clutch. Car drives exactly like factory on both items. Totally no different. Well except massive grip with hard launches with excellent torque increase. And i'm no chav..........

Maybe your best mate is PS LEWIS.?????????

A lightened flywheel WILL have an effect on the car pulls away, you just adapt your driving style quickly.

The car will be easier to stall.

Took about half the weight off my old Clio 16v flywheel and it seemed to be win-win as far as I could see. I listened to all the pub talk about how it would struggle to get up hills and be easy to stall etc etc but it just improved the pickup a little with no downside. Obviously you can go TOO far, but you don't install those kind of flywheels on a street car.
