Question EGT Monitor?

Question for the more experienced modd'd lot...

What are the main benefits of monitoring EGT? Is there a normal temp range as per say oil temp where everything works optimal? Also where do people mount the sender units? On the headers, up pipe or downpipe?

Would this be a more valuable gauge to add rather than fuel pressure? Interested in some opinions....
Thanks.

Monitoring the EGTs mate are really only used when tuning..

If youre not mapping the car yourself, or having it mapped regularly using the EGTs as i guide to cylinder temps then theres not much point in you fitting one.

The thermocouple should be fitted in the uppipe approx 2" below the turbocharger.

As a guide, on a road car anything over 900 deg C in this location is not good as you will be getting near the thermal limits of the valvetrain etc.

Hope that helps

Yeah I'm not a mapper, only interested in early warning systems (AFR, knocklink, etc!) when things go wrong. So under those pretenses, a fuel pressure gauge would probably be more useful then?

If you have AFR gauge and knocklink you should notice a lack of fuel pressure with these.... rather than filling the cabin with loads of gauges . You'll get paranoid looking at them all the time and not see the road ahead!

I had a fuel pump slowly fail and the above gauges showed me enough information for me to get it checked without the need for a fuel pressure gauge (in cabin one that is).
