TD05 - Oil in exhaust housing
Hi all, I recently bought a second hand TD05 16G FE. (fleabay job)
When I received it, I noticed a small amount of play on the main bearing, and also a small amount of what looked like oil behind the turbine in the exhaust housing.
So, I sent it away to turbotechnics to be checked over. Low and behold, they said that it needs stripping down and a re bulid! Ok I said, how much? £195!!!
I said don't bother and I am having it sent back to me as I speak.
A) is it normal to have a small amount of play in the bearing?
B) is it normal to have what appears to be oil in the exhaust housing?
c) is £195 a lot to have a bearing and seal replaced?
Basically, I don't want to spend 3 hours fitting the turbo to find out that its fubard! And I wouln't know that until after I had the thing mapped to my car!
Knew I should have bought one from Andy!
Any help appreciated!

Was the play front to back OR side to side OR both. A little bit of play side to side (ie not enough to make the comp wheel catch the housing) is normal, front to back indicates a problem.
If the turbo has been packaged up and posted then it could indeed have a bit of oil in the exhaust housing.

Received my td05 yesterday (same guy). Very little play in the shaft 1mm backwards/forwards, and a little side to side. But i have recently read that the small bit of play (side to side) will be taken up when under pressure. Seems all OK to me

if the turbo was stored verticaly oil will pass through in to the exhaust housing due to the type of piston seal in there.
bearings do have play. oil will self centre them.
i think its roughly 0.004inc/0.10mm of play in the thrust bearing.
that company will say it needs repair because they cant guarantee old units, not a bad price at all.

Did you have any problems fitting? How long did it take you?

I started pulling it apart at 11.00 and finished around 1.30. I did have some help from a friend (mechanic) just to make sure i wasn't doing anything
wrong. I took it apart and he put it back together Stop worrying and get that turbo fitted

Hi guys, I don't know what your worried about Chris, I don't know any of these guys on here, so there advice is totally indipendent of me. Like I say I've done 30 now and not sold a bad one yet and yours was one of the best with new water pipes the lot and a bargain price!!!
Just fit it, it took me about 3 hours to fit mine. You won't regret it, awsome conversion.
Cheers, Hans.

Thanks m8, just wondering how long to run it without a re-map.
Should be able to get one in the new year, but don't want to risk any engine damage.
It should be ok, shouldn't it?

It will be OK, run boost on actuator pressure (0.7bar) like i have done until remap and you will not damage the car. Sounds like you got the better deal, story of my life. Get fitting
