Default Hybrid TD04 or VF34/35 (UK STi8) Turbo?

Right, looking for some advice!

My car 80k MY01 bugeye WRX (280bhp & 240 Torque) I am looking at a remap at the end of jan off the master himself Andy F, question is which turbo do I go for as I am only looking for my car to have a quicker pull off the gear I'm in etc. 300/300 would be good.

I have a spare inlet with everything attached so I was going to add a set of pink injects and bolt it all back on which i would need if I went for the VF turbo but I can stick with the standard injectors if I go with the Hybrid TD04.

Thanks for your help

S!

Either turbo will be good for IRO 320/320 but on larger injectors or keeping the current WRX ones and increasing fuel pressure. An uprated pump will also be needed and the STi intercooler will help keep charge temps cool.
I take it you have bought an STi inlet manifold complete with injectors?

Both turbos cost roughly the same (TD04 £400 exchange, good VF34/35 £300) so the choice is really how you want your torque curve to be?

Andy F will be best to advise you as he's doing the mapping

Better to get it from the 'horses mouth' (no offence lol) than him getting there and saying you'd have been better off going a different route.

Thanks guys,
I have a spare WRX manifold which i'm cleaning up and was going to get a set of pinks anyway fit it all along with the inlet spacers I bought off Carl Davey.
Fuel pump is sitting to be fitted and I have the STi tmic with the undertray.

Ultimately I'd say VF series can give a little more peak power (The STi's can run 340ish with a VF, Andy gets ~320 peak with the TD04 hybrid), whilst the hybrid TD04 will give a bit earlier spool / less lag. Pick which suits your requirements

Hi Stalked,

Considering your power is running at 280bhp, your torque figure seems low. Are you running a decat or do you still have one or more in?

The reason I ask is that I have a MY01 WRX too, running 282/282 with full decat, so would expect you to be getting more torque than you are.

I'm suprised you haven't had any problems, with a full decat and no remap.

Oh well, happy days!

Bugeye WRX with TD04 and full decat is probably just at the limit of what the OEM ECU can cope with without a re-map. De cat the STi Bugeye and there may be a problem with boost spikes.

Off the shelp Bugeye My01 came with 215 BHP so 280 BHP just from a de-cat probably a little optimistic.

Has anyone thought about a front entry TD05 16G ? Tough critter, good spool up, good for 320BHP plus, plenty available

It can be mapped conservatively as well, it doesn't need to be mapped within an inch of it's life, speak to your potential mapper and get his advice, he will only do what you ask him and will map as per your requirements (also within the modifications capabilities)

It depends what your after. If you 'only' want ~300 but with the best possible response then the TD04H would be the best choice. If your chasing bigger figures then it will be at the sacrifice of low down response. For instance, even with a VF35 with it's smaller p15 exh housing (compared to VF34 p18) you will notice the slightly slower response. You'll have a stronger mid to top end, but real world performance would be very similar (even though the VF35 should give more bhp/torque). The VF34 exacerbates this and it's down to what you want at the end of the day..

Indeed, mine's mapped to 282/282 with full decat but standard TD04 and it does start to 'wheeze' at 5500 rpm's. I like the quick spool up of the TD04 and was thinking of changing to the AF Hybrid TD04 a few months back (but spent my money elsewhere instead).

I may take a drive over to see you next week as I have a couple of days off, all the fitment of said items will be done at yours hopefully pre-remap, so yes we do need to talk soon
