Ford Escort Mk1 with suburu engine!
okok havent done it yet but going to.
i need some help before i do this.
atm i have a mk1 escort with a Nissan 200sx engine! but we all know u get peanuts power compaired to a subu engine.
New 2 Site - My Escort Mk1 Nissan Turbo - Turbosport Forums
that what its had so far!
MY QUESTIONS?
1: is converting to RWD just a matter of taking out the front drive shafts welding some blanking plates and welding some stuff inside?
2: I require some measurements of the engine and box. width and lenght would be a great help.
Regards
Matt C

would it not be easier to drop in an SR20DET engine and save yourself a lot of hassle? IIRC the CA18DET and SR20DET engines are fairly similar in dimensions and fit so you would be saving yourself a lot of time and money doing it that way......
SR20 is just as tunable as a regular Impreza block.

CA18DET = 13 year old engine only making 156bhp standard
SR20DET = Expensive/Rare and fragile engines.
Plus its already been done. ive never heard of a Escort Mk1 with a Suburu engine.
Any assistance on the questions would be great.
thanks

Excellent project to do!
Look foreward to progress this winter.
We needs lots of pics too.
I used to build American style Hor Rods 20 years back, so appreciate exactly what you are up to.
I think you need:
Are you fitting the Impreza rear suspension?
I have mine in pieces at the moment so good position for measurements etc.

Im interested in this too. I want to build a scoob powered kit car.. But i won't be starting mine till may time next year. I'm sure a lot of the info you get will be really usefull though! (i wanted 4wd but seems near impossible with the engine position in relation to the front wheels on caterham style ones so going to go rwd!)
Good luck with it mate!!

A couple of years back, there was a subaru powered focus rally car. We were sat in a stage (not sure which round, was held in Hinckley), heard a subaru but this focus with gold wheels appeared. Didn't really take that much notice of it untill it came around again and one of the marshall's mentioned it had subaru running gear.
About 5/6 years ago a friend of mine decided to drop the running gear from a grp A legacy into a subaru pick-up. After months of work, we suceeded. It was alot of work, had to cut and reinforce chasis legs. Also built turrets for the front and rear. Managed to use the engine and diff cross members but had to design and make the gearbox cross member. I'll dig up the pics and post them up at some point.

There's a mkII escort rally car in Ireland with a Subaru engine and running gear. Well actually I think it's more like a Subaru with a mkII escort body welded on to the Subaru floorpan. It was discussed a lot on here a few months ago, try a search.
I co-drove on that rally around Hinckley, it was the Midland Rally, when the Focus was out and I think it was as above, Focus bodyshell on a subaru floorpan, rather than a Subaru engine dropped into a focus.

Like I said, was strange hearing a subaru approaching but seeing a focus. Must say that the car was flying...........

acording to the drawing its only short by 20mm and im sure you could pannel beat the inner wings out by that much each side and with it being a flat four it would lower the centre of gravity there fore improving the handling no end i am sure a rover v8 is wider and this has been done to death in mk1 and 2 escorts and to answer your question on rear wheel drive http://www.clubwrx.net/forums/showth...threadid=27532
try this link also if you used a typer or type ra box and rear diff it would accelerate stupidley quick i may no of a engine you can have to dummy fit its a scrap engine put could help with the sizeing issues
the only other engine that jumps to mind is a evo engine possibly

If you can't 'open' the engine bay (why not?) then how about a Rover V6?
Small and very light, sounds good too.
I am sure an Impreza would go in there easy.
Come on!
Worst bit will be getting the gear lever in the right place!!

and for a 500bhp engine the internal mods would be pulsar con rods with little modifactions so they fit, (second had very cheap) , forged pistons (about 400 pounds) cosmetic steel headgasket 100 pounds arp rod and head bolts 150 pounds and u then have a very stong engine for very cheap money, the only weak point at high revs are the hydrolic tappits if revving very high as for the s2000 engines there bullet proof and seen them fitted in a mk2 but to get any more power then standard will be expensive indeed, in my opinion either use a cossie lump or a sr20det and the sr20 is alloy so they save wieght on the cossy lump.
