Default Whirring noise???

Hi all

started hearing a whirring noise from the engine of my99 classic..

The noise increases and decreases as you blip the throttle.

Any ideas?

Im about as mechanical as a one legged duck by the way

Does it sound as though its from around the gear selector/box area?.Mine whirs very faintly sometimes when changing gear 4th to 5th and even fainter when its in gear sometimes!!??.I have become paranoid about all the noises on these cars, never have i had so many rattles and little noises in a car i guess its their way though?

My suggestions would be cam belt or alternator bely (or air con belt if you have it)

The cam belt could still be rubbing on the casing or a problem with the tensioner etc even if it was changed recently. The Air con doesnt have to be on for there to be a noise as the belt is driven by the engine all the time. Hope you find out what its is. I assume it could also be the power steering belt.

low power steering fluid can cause this problem, check the reservoir. It may look full but add some fluid to it. It is quite common on the earlier cars, dont know if it affected the 99 though

could be the front bearing in the alternator, mine went earlier this year (just a couple of months after a cam belt change, my suspicion is the alternator belt was put back on to tight.

I had this last week, topping the bottle up cured the problem

Would the noise be caused by power steering even when im stationary?

When are the cam belt tenioners supposed to be changed?

thanks
Dave

If stationary with the engine running then yes the power steering is being driven so the noise will be there (assuming its the power steering of course ..... put a bit more fluid in anyway it cant do any harm).

Cam belt tensioners are quite often recommended to be changed each time the cam belt is done. i believe there were some early ones with problems and a new style replacement which is more reliable. If you do a search I'm sure you'll find how to tell the differences.

I had the same sound which turned out to be a cambelt guide that was'nt fitted correctly and started to eat into the belt. Pics below:

Apply a little presure to the outside of the casing and see if the sound goes.

Hope you sort it mate.

Regards

Chris

Hey Mate,
Belt was changed in June this year so the one thats pictured had been on since then. I would say get the tensioner done as well when you get the belt replaced.

How much were the tensioners m8?

Belts been on 8000K.

£184.00 to change the belt at the clinic but there is piece of mind.

Thats assuming it is the belt or the tensioner.
