Default Thinking of upgradeing the turbo

Hi guys/gals

Ive got a my99 uk 2000 turbo.which at the moment has a td05 amongst a few other mods and its pushing roughly 340 bhp... I thinking of changeing the turbo in the near future in the hope to be chaseing the 400bhp mark.

What i would like to know is what turbo would be best for this (if not the unit i already have).. I would like to try and keep lag as low as possible (who dosent) as at the moment its a great car to drive on the road.. i dont do any track driving at all but would like to do the occasional qtr mile run.

any input greatly recieved

cheers

me

If its still the UK gearbox in the car id Imagine that will be one of the limiting factors or at least worth budgeting for if it does happen to brake at some stage. Ive heard the limit is around the 350lbs level.

There are a few people running that on standard UK internals I THINK but I dont know if id chance it myself to be honest. Then your injectors are 440cc which are good for around 350bhp and even with the raised fuel pressure I cant see them streching to your target.

20g Turbo with normal fuel might get you close to 400bhp but on a 2 Litre car the 18g would be my choice for mid range power and every day driver although wont make 400bhp. Think the only way to defo clear 400 is a TD06 49 or the likes which on a 2.0 Litre you will be sacrificing your early spool up.

Im sure there will be others along to go into more detail or cover the parts ive left out but hopefully that will give you something to look into

Cheers mate like i said the td05 is just part of my mods i do run bigger injectors, walbro pump, front mount, bigger exhaust blah blah ive got a water inj kit sitting here too thats going to get fitted at somepoint over christmas.

Again i love the way the car pulls at the minute so if i can get abit more power out of her with the td05 then thats a bonus as i dont want to loose the spool up

How can i determine what varient of td05 i have ?? is it something i can determine just by looking at it..or does it need removeing and measureing etc ?

Sounds good. The 18g spools more or less the same as the 16g AFAIK so id say that would be perfect and a decent step up.

Running 1.4 bar

As I'm on the OEM engine and gearbox Bob Rawle has mapped the car to stop the turbo from destroying the drivetrain.

Tongue in cheek here.....

there was a post on another thread saying that some mapper was a tuning God (it's the rolling road versus road mapping thread).

I was so tempted to say that the position was already taken by Bob Rawle with little chance of the post being re-advertised ..LOL

you may struggle to get 400 bhp with a td05 18 or 20 g with std pistons

Shaun is one of the lucky ones

I'd be thinking of changing the FSE reg to something a little more reliable..

Not sure I'd be going too close to 400bhp with the std engine and transmission.

A well set up 18g would be a VERY good everyday proposition.

I too have heard dodgy comments about the FSE reg, but if it's working then fair enough!

Bob gets my vote, as he did my mapping and I was extremely impresssed! Andy's reputation speaks for itself too though, so whoever is closer!
