Changed inlet pipe, now have boost issues
Hi,
Car is MY02 STI.
Mods amongst many are td05/06-20g turbo, 650cc injectors, headers, aps fmic, etc etc...
Just changed the turbo inlet pipe for nice new one that was on ebay.
I was assuming a remap might be needed so thats not an issue.
However I gave it a little booty after having it fitted and as soon as the car hit around 20psi I heard a (now don't laugh) a puff/fart type noise and the car pulled back. knocklink had a few lights.
this was in 3d gear. tried again in 4th/5th/6th and as soon as you try and hit 20+ psi this happens.
now, its a little too late, but I've now read about surge etc, BUT, is there any possibilty that the pipe might actually be collapsing ?
Am going on a local dyno hopefully this afternoon to actually see if this is the case.
If its not, then maybe a remap will help sort it out.
If not, then its off with the new and back on with the old

Put the old back on and try again.
If there are no issues then at least you know there is something wrong with the new pipe.
TBH, I would never buy an item such as this off that site. Your better off spending a little bit extra money and getting a proper Samco one instead, assuming that it wasn't a Samco one you bought that is.

Its not a Samco, but before it was fitted is ws put side by side to samco and the quality was the same if not better. No more squidgy than the samco either.
Hopefully I'll know more this afternoon.

remember that samco used to run 3-ply hoses until a couple of S/Netters running high boost found they were collapsing whilst on the R/R ( try looking whilst your booting it on a "private road" in 5th isn't easy!).
Samco now make their hose for the Impreza in a 5-ply model.

It's the walls of the inlet pipe collapsing that are causing the problem. I imported ten of these hoses from China (was yours an Autobahn 88 item by any chance?), and had to send the other 9 back.
It was a nightmare to fit, so finding the same problems as you on the first test drive after fitting was gutting. I resolved the issue by fitting a jubilee clip at the corner closest to the radiator, and by compressing the top and bottom of the hose with the clip, the problem disappeared.
I'm still not happy with mine and will be changing to a Samco pipe soon - despite the fact they're hideously overpriced for what they are.

yep its a autobahn88
Its driving like a pig. SURGE all over the place.
turns out on further investigation its also far too big a pipe diameter wise.
Just not made properly.
can't put the original back on as is broke coming off.
Have now got a pucka one from RCM on order, being fitted tomorrow.
I have emailed the place I bought it from asking for a refund.

I have read about similar previously. I spotted on "airpowersystems" (APS) website a metal intake pipe and fitting kit. I have e-mailed them to see if it would fit the european/ UK models. The reply was that they are not sure as they have not tried it. At the price it is, I think comparable with a Samco, I am not too keen on getting it and finding it does not fit or needs modification to fit. So I am going to wait a while before purchase to see what happens.

I have just looked on US website and it costs $275 wich equates to £143.91. So I am going to e-mail to ask for price including delivery. If reasonable might just bite the bullet and get one.

ScoobyDazza, IIRC surge and collapsing intake pipes are different problems. If the problem is a collapsing pipe then fitting some big jubilee clips ON THE OUTSIDE of the pipe may solve the problem. If the problem is surge then the pipe may be too large for the turbo (VF35 and possibly VF30) but mapping may cure it to some degree.
Your pipe doesn't look bad IMO from the photos and is certainly keenly priced.

cheers for that floyd
i'm slowly getting bits and pieces that i will need for my upcoming rebuild
would be done by now if i hadn't just blown up my lorry
saw the above for 57 + 10 , offered 47, accepted
bargain
i will be using a MD321T turbo and after speaking to Mark he doesn't see the point in changing it for a similar thing for £235
car is always mapped after every mod by BRD so should be ok
cheers for putting my mind at rest, a bit lol
