Default Any ideas??

Got up this morning at my Lasses house in Newark to make the 80 mile journey to Harrogate. The car was absolutley fine until 2 miles down the road. For whatever reason, it just cut out as if the fuel pump had been unplugged. I tried to restart to no avail. I was gonna walk back to my lasses but decided to give it another stab. Put the key back in an it fired straight away. Decided to go back to my lasses and it cut again 100m down the road.
Did the same as before and got out, left it a minute, got back in and all was fine. This time i managed to drive the 2 miles back.
I called the AA and they gave it a good look over but obviously as it was working (even after a 5 mile drive with a AA van in tow) there was nothing they could do. Anyway, i've driven the 75 miles back to my house and it hasn't missd a beat.
The AA man suggested that the transponder in the key may be playing up. It might make sense as the only time that the car would fire was when the key was removed and then replaced in the ignition.
Does anyone have any thoughts?
