Default Cambelt and Guide Problems

Hey Fella's,

Well picked my New Car up in the week, its a MY2000 Turbo Saloon (Classic). On the way home I noticed a noise coming from the engine bay and on inspection the following day I found that it was coming from the drivers side cambelt cover. I have just removed the cover to find that one of the Guides (Picured Below - Fig.1) has been rubbing against the cambelt and has warn away some of the belt. (See Fig.2 below)

Fig.1

Fig.2

This obviously should happen but I was wondering what would have caused this to happen. The cambelt was replaced approx. 7000 miles agi by an independent garage that the previous owner had done.

I am guessing that belt now needs to be replaced but is the guide adjustable or something and the garage has'nt adjusted it correctly cos I dont want this to happen again or can these be left off.

Also is there anyone local to me (10 minutes from Peterborough) that could help me replaced the cambelt as I have'nt done one on a Scoob before. I will of course pay for time, beers etc.

Any help and advice would really be greatfully received atm as I am not ahppy to drive it as it is.

Thanks In Advance. Regards

Chris

Also, whats the cost to have the cambelt replaced at say an Impreza dealership etc or a rough guide of what to expect to pay somehwere else to replace the belt.

Here's a close-Up of the belt. It has'nt gone into the Fibre part of the belt but would be nice if I could leave it for a few weeks but obviously dont want it to snapped and wreck a perfectly good engine.

Subaru4you in newbury charge around £510 for a C&D service (that's all fluids replaced, new plugs, cambelt, filters etc)

A "D Service (cambelt change, oil service, fluid top up, coolant replacmnent) is £320

Just to give some comparison.

As for the nearest place to you - not sure, not my neck of the woods - The nearest subaru specialist to you I have heard of is probably Graham Goode in Leicester.

But am sure other with more knowledge of the area will know better.

Thanks Guys, Just read through the service history book and found that the belt was replaced by a garage on 05/2006 (90,000 Mile Service) so am going to see if they will put it right or at least cover the cost of it which I feel they should. Not going to start/Move it now as advised.

Thanks again Guys, Regards

Chris

Hi, go and buy a lottery ticket, with your luck you will win, I can,t believe that it has'nt snapped. Phone trading standards before you contact the garage so that you can be confident in your approach to the garage Good luck PS. DON'T START THE CAR

I've seen belts in much better condition than that snap! Pick me 6 random numbers please.

PS The garage that replaced the belt has the write to rectify the work. If you get another garage to replace the belt and then try to claim the bill back from the first garage, you will lose.

The Guides are adjustable (slightly) they also changed them at some point (I cannot remember when though !!!) for a different type.

Once the rad is removed, Crank Pulley Etc & the timing covers are off it is not to bad of a job.
A poorly adjusted or faulty cambelt tensioner could cause more throw from the belt causing the rubbing, I would inspect & replace the tensioner also for piece of mind.
