Default Lambda on a MY99 Turbo.

Had some minor rough running when cold on my UK Turbo.
Having read many threads on here, it seems to be a common fault that is very rarely fixed.
However, I dis-connected the lambda sensor just to see whether it was on its way out. Now the car has no stuttering when cold whatsoever.
I take it that this points to the sensor being at fault?
Don't really want to waste money on a new one though and get the same problem. Is there anyway to test if the sensor is working within original spec??

Chris,

I take it that your car is prone to gentle surging - for want of a better term - off-boost and this is most prominent when the car is cold?

If it's nothing more than that, I very much doubt that replacing the lambda sensor will do anything for you.

Below is an extract from an off-line e-mail dialogue with Impreza guru and all round top chap Bob Rawle on this very subject:

" HI Andrew, the pulsing is actually caused by something relatively straightforward, as the ecu adds and subtracts fuel during its closed loop phase you actually feel this as the pulsing...stop and just unplug the lambda sensor, you will do no harm, drive again, is the pulsing still there? It should vanish. The ecu doesn't mind the lambda sensor being unplugged, it sees a fixed default voltage on the lambda input pin that stops it running closed loop and adding or subtracting fuel, if you do get a CEL when its unplugged it's merely reminding you that it is unplugged and has no effect on the behaviour of the car.

A new age car doesn't suffer due to the greatly enhanced sophistication of the Hitachi ecu.

When I map the factory ecu on the MY99-00 cars I remove the lambda completely, that allows me to map completely open loop which minimises/eliminates the pulsing as the open loop map is very near to stoich as I set it.

I hope this helps??

Possibly not the answer you wanted, just one of the car's foibles...!

All the best,

Andy

Hi chris
For info, my car has done this since new, MY99 only happens when engine is cold, once the lambda and the engine is warm all is fine.

As andy has said it's just one of the car's foibles.

It only uses the lambda in closed loop mode, Idle/cruising throttle, I would suspect your MPG would decrease, but I am not sure how it would affect the CEL light on the dash, or if it would put the ECU into limp home mode.
Some of the tuners on here should be able to answer that one.
