What year is the car and has this only started happening recently and does it go away when warmed up - ie when the weather has gone cooler ?

Usually dieselish sound is piston slap, most common 97/97 model year cars. Sounds ok on idle but becomes more pronounced when engine revved or when you drive off. Goes away when engine gets warm, worse on a cold morning.

If it doesn't go away when warmed up then either it is really bad piston slap or something else.
