Default Well I think the big end has gone

hi all...bad news I think......really bad knocking/rattling from the base of the engine....2000 rpm to 3500rpm really bad.....have this horrid feeling Mr Big End has gone.......

1996 Wagon 2.0 Turbo......only heard it yesterday evening........I'm guessing simply break her rather than repair...any thoughts?

Cheers

H

you are looking at around 2k to sort out, so think carefully about how much the wagon is worth?

Unhappy not that bad

it does not sound that bad at all....you could still mistake it for bloody good rattle....may be it is piston slap.......

The car starts 100%, no knocks that I can hear......rev her to 2000/2200 then there is the rattle.....if you back off slightly then it stops..the same if you accelerate slightly...it differs.....I must admit, it is not there all the time, but I can make it happen.....if the big end has gone, will it make the noise ALL the time??

any advise would be great....I plan to 'nurse' her down to Roger Clark Engineering to see what they say..but I'm afraid t could make matter worse.....

If I dropped in a WRX engine would I be able to use my ECU?

Thoughts?

paying for a second hand lump is a waste of time IMO

either get yours rebuilt so you know its done properly, or sell the car as is

why pay a grand for an engine you have no idea about, it could be trashed to death and blow up next week?

thats why wou get one with some warrenty!

a rebuild is not a option on a 12 year old car worth 3.5-4k tops

may aswell sell the car for 1500 as a project or split it and sell for spares!

that was my options i chose what i did and was lucky!.. i see your point...

but its a case or making a judgment call!

stuck between the devil and deep....I rebuild is 100% out of the question...far to expensive.....I still need to do some digging as to the exact issue..I might be luckily, may not be a big end issue...I need to do some more fault finding to determine the true problem...I think it is a big end, but that is not confirmed........might just try to sell as is.....
