Would that not be because the wagon uses a TD04 and the saloon the TD05. Or am I wrong in thinking that. Oh, and I mean WRX for both not UK cars.
Therefore what Bob say's is correct since the TD05 produces higher boost (I think) than the TD04, therefore ignition timing etc would need to be different to compensate for this.

The early JDM Forester (97/98) shared the higher compression engine (9:1) with its Impreza JDM wagon cousin. Both used a variant of the TD04 that gave higher torque low down but couldn't flow at higher revs.
I guess both models were specced to appeal to people needing to lug loads around.

My 98 WRX wagon used a TD04 and most of the ancillaries the same as the UK Turbo. Before I swapped out for a VF35 and Power FC, it definitely was a real lugger, happy to chug along in the 2000-4000 rpm range. It would pull away without needing to change down but was a bit gutless at the top of the revs. The VF35 also spooled up earlier on the standard wagon ECU compared to the Power FC which I put in later.
