Default Wheel studs sheared off!!!

Anyone ever come across this on a scooby??
NSF wheel it is on.Car had developed a slight knock noise at very low speeds in 1st gear over the last 4-5 days.No wheel wobble. When jacked up,no play in the wheel.
The wheel and nuts was checked yesterday for being on and tight. It was...Today,the noise is still there and it has now sheared of 2 wheel studs.Other nuts are still tight too.

My 1st thought is loose wheel..but it couldnt be,as it has been checked and double checked, within the last 48 hrs...Anyone any idea of what else may cause this??

BTW...I had the wheels off the front 3 weeks ago to do the front pads.I thought it may have worked the wheel nuts loose over the 3 week period, but like i say, they were tight.

Also..surely if the front wheel was loose to any kind of extent, something would be felt thought the steering wheel???

Any help appreciated??

Ok...I accept what your saying..Can you expand how you have answered this.
Is it a common thing on a scoob???
I have probably removed and refitted thousands of wheels in my time, but never heard of anythin like this..

Cheers

We've sheared studs off, by over tightning, in the past on grp A leggies, not hard to do......
Look at the stud holes on the wheel, make sure they haven't become oval.

Cheers Gary.

But,these wheels were tightened 3 weeks ago...Just CHECKED over the last couple of days..No extra turning or tightening was applied..Seems weird to me..

Just cant seem to get my head around it at all!!!!

Do you have aftermarket wheels, if so has the centre adaptor dropped out before you refitted the wheel wthout you realising,. This could slowly stress the studs until they eventually break.

Good suggestion that...But no,bog standard wheels..

Just thinkin allsorts at the moment..I may have overtightened them..I cant say for sure, but i have tightened millions of wheels nuts and never had a problem..Was thinkin about the high ambient temps swellng the alloys etc etc etc...God knows !!!!!!!!

Have you always used a torque wrench?
It's easy to overtighten by hand, you know that extra pull to make sure.
Might have started before you got the car?
Might be an idea to check all the other studs.
Look to see if they are thinning at any point.

It could be a weight issue!

Just a quick update if anyone is interested.

Fitted new studs and nuts this mornin.Original knocking noise still there.Anyway after about an hour of looking,we found the outer CV had partially seized on one part of its rotation.

Stripped CV joint and repacked with grease and "worked" joint so operation was correct.Refitted on the car and now noise has gone and car seems fine.

Conclusion...

We think the action of the partially seized CV in the hub has acted in a "hammer" motion, and this has caused the studs to shear...

Anyway...time will tell i guess..
