Post Is My MAF o.k. ? MY99 u.k.Turbo

MY 99 u.k. Turbo.
Hi, have had a idling and slight missfire problem recently, and have changed plugs, lambda sensor and cleaned ICV and boost solenoid to try to solve the problem. Reset ECU and no improvement. Was going to buy a new Maf sensor tomorrow, however I took mine out today and cleaned it using brake cleaner and refitted it and everything now seems fine. When I unplug the MAF the engine stalls within seconds. Does this mean my MAF is o.k. as it seems to be running fine now ? Or is their any sure way of testing it ?
Has any one else cleaned it this way and had success ?

Personally - if i thought my maf was possibly faulty, i would change it without hesitation. I change mine every 2 years without fail. A faulty maf "can" end your engine.
As far as i'm aware, you can only test for a failed maf as opposed to a failing maf. A failing maf is where the danger is

For the sake of £80 i personally would buy a new one, just for the peace of mind. A rebuild is a lot of cash - £2k or there abouts.

If it's running well, it's fine!!!!!

Those who change their MAFs as a service item are mad, IMHO.

Now, maybe, there is a case for swapping the original if you have a MY99 or MY00 ....... but, apparently, SUBARU have 'improved' them - so, no need to swap again years to come .......

But, I haven't changed mine - MY00 and 67,000miles - car runs fine ........ I'm not about to change something that doesn't need changing!!!

Mine may be the original MAF, as it has 5 pins not 4 pins as I believe the new improved ones have. Is this correct ? If so, I think I will play it safe and buy a new one. Thanks for all the advice guys.
P.s. Any one know the Subaru part number for a MY99 u.k Turbo MAF sensor ?

Try re-setting the ecu, if it has poor idle after this, it's a good indication the MAF will be faulty.
If unsure run off boost until you replace it,£70.00 is cheaper than a new engine.

Thanks for all the advice guys. Have bought and fitted a new MAF sensor today.
Even though the one I cleaned seemed o.k. I didn't want to take the risk with it, as it may have been on the car from new, as it is the original 5 pin type where my new one is the updated 4 pin type. I can now relax and enjoy driving my Scooby again.
P.s. Do I need to do an ECU reset now that ive fitted a new MAF sensor, even though i am getting no fault code and everything seems fine ?

My MY99 is at Subaru now, and they just rang saying it was the MAF sensor thats the problem. He said i'm just pricing it up now, can you come and get car, as it will be Monday when they can get the part.

What am I looking at for price from them fitted etc?

Thanks.

Depends on there hourly rate they charge, its only a 15 min job and that's with a cup of tea to drink, dont expect to get any change from £130.00 at a guess including the part.

£170 inc parts and labour, which would include them looking at it yesterday. I asked how much the part was and he said £70.

that will do it, or you can connect the green (i believe) plugs under the dash near the steering column, if you do a search on here you will find the deffinative ecu reset guide

Thanks guys,

I am still waiting to here back from Subaru, I rang the other week and they said they had some mecanics leave so they were short staffed.

I have fitted a Baileys Dump Value, installed a CD Player and put petrol in it, can I really do the MAF sensor myself?

Also, where can I get one from online? The idling is getting worse, and I dont want to nacker the car anymore.

Thanks.

Paul.

The maf is really easy. Two torx bolts IIRC to remove. Scoobyclinic sell them aswell as plenty of other places for around £80

Had a quick look round, and cannot find the part anywhere Sorry to bother you again.

I emailed Scoobyclinic and they want £100+Vat, Subaru was only £70 for the part. Is the ScoobyClinic one going to be MUCH better than the OE one, or the same?

Do you have any sites that stock the item?

Thanks again.
