Exclamation Engine cleaning.

Hi peeps...

now my car has 50000miles worth of grime under the bonnet,

so i'm looking for the safest way to have it cleaned. Can i do it myself, or would i be better getting someone to carry out the task?? I would prefer to trust myself on this task...

Whats needed and whats the procedure??

it's an MY01 WRX Bugeye.

Help!!

lol Tony, cant i just cover the Alternator and Alarm up, then hose of the grime, after applying a degreaser???

It does sound a good plan but there are these little microchips in the alternator that dont like water and if they get wet they usually die hence its best to not wash your engine or the bill is like 600+ quid as you cant repair or recondition these alternators (though mine was an STi )

i wash mine regularly, and have done for two years. no need to take special precaution with the alternator at all but obviously dont spray water directly on it.

Dont use a pressure washer though, use a tin or two of gunk spray and a brush to stiple all the bad bits, and then a hosepipe on spray (i.e not on a direct jet.

I used to use CD2 detailer and cleaner which was superb but its impossible to get now.

if you have an induction kit cover that up.

Few washes and a bit of TLC and the results will amaze you - heres mine.

I have hot washed numerous Classic engine bays.
The only problem has occassionally been with aftrer market alarms so now I cover them with plastic bags and duck tape.
Apply a good degreaser first, Millsol Green or even Gunk. Leave for a few minutes and aggitate any area that is particularly grimey.
Hot wash off.
DO NOT JET THE INTERCOOLER OR RADIATOR.

As per Havey, ignore the scare mongers about pressure washer, just use your head and not aim direct jets at or into coil packs, plug leads, intercooler fins or into alternator Etc (low pressure or with the lance aimed from a long distance fine though). Oh and stick a carrier bag over any alarm sirens or aftermarket cone filters.

General purpose automotive degreaser does wonders...cheaper tham CD2 too

Did my classic twice...just covered the alternator, alarm sounder and intercooler. No problems. Put bonnet down with ehgine running to steam clean inside bonnet lid. Done same with Blobeye great results no problems
