Default Type RA's ... Engine, weight ...

Hi,

Just a few questions, I have a Type RA '96.

1.
How can I tell whether it's an RA STi or just a normal RA WRX?
Is it because the STi's have a Red Top? I was told that they didn't do the Red Top's until Ver 3? It's hard to tell whether it is just a WRX or STi...?

2.
I'm looking to buy a P1 bonnet or Carbon Fibre bonnet.
Is my RA bonnet aluminium the same as a P1? And I'm assuming the CF bonnets are much, much lighter?

Thanks in advance

CF bonnets arent much lighter than an aluminium one no, so if you have an alu one then you may as well keep it...

P1 bonnet wont fit 96 Ra without a new grille, headlights and bumper.

the way to confirm the model is to check the applied model code from the little metal plate on the N/S/F turret against the catherine/ken site.
also check the sticker in the driver's door shut.

The CF shelled efforts are actually heavier.

I've got new lights, and I will be getting a new grille to fit of course, and I have a different bumper - as told by Subaru dealer I don't need to have another bumper.

So this concludes, should I get a P1 alu bonnet? As I want a facelift...

I'm getting rather confused.

Is it possible to mod the current bonnet to fit the face lift grille and headlights?

thanks in advance

Have a look here http://www.catherineandken.co.uk/sti/wrx.html and you will be able to decipher the model code so you know what it really is, but the WRX RA's didnt have a roof vent and DCCD.

and for Q.2, yes you will need any later ally facelift bonet(try grade-a), or a carbon one,(but the carbon ones are heavier than the ally) If you look at the 2 side vents, you will see how they differ. I wouldnt bother modifying the existing bonnet, unless you really want the hastle.

Hello again,

Thanks for your reply.

Er hope I'm not being daft. But DCCD means?

So the RA WRX STi's did have a roof vent and DCCD?

I think mine is just the RA WRX.

The carbon ones are heavier than the aluminium ones did you say? Didn't someone elses reply before say that it's lighter?

Sorry for the questions again, I'm not trying ot make this awkward.

DCCD = Driver contorled centre differential, it's a little wheel on the centre console that changes the torque split.

and yes, the carbon ones are heavier. and are mainly fibreglass with a carbon outer, theres nothing in it really, it's just down to looks

no problems, thats what we're here for

Righto..

So from what I gather

The RA WRX STi's 1996 v2's come with no redtop engine, but it does come with a roof vent and DCCD?

Where as... The normal RA WRX 1996 v2's come with nothing? :O psh...!

Boo..

I get it now!

But is that the only real difference between them both? WRX and WRX STi?

What about in terms of performance?

Sorry just need to gather mucho information as possible!

not true about the rear lights, sorry, my sti RA has std. lights with red/white and orange bits.
the sti has a closed deck engine and better heads/valvetrain, both should have the dccd wheel and dash display and roof vent.
whats the applied model code from the vin plate?
