White smoke everywhere NOOOOOOO!!!
Driving down the M5 yesterday at a very casual speed of 70 mph when MY99 UK turbo starting running like a bag of ****. It felt as if the car was miss firing and was struggling to get above 60 mph in any gear.
As i slowed down to get into the hard shoulder, a massive amount of white smoke bellowed from the exhaust and under the hood. After inspection the smoke looked as if it was coming from around the turbo area, which has made me think that my turbo has blown or something more serious!!!!
Please excuse my on this matter as i have the mechanical expertise of a goldfish. If anybody could possibly shed some light on this for me it would be much appreciated. Cheers
If it is the turbo, would it be the TD04 version

Easiest way to check the head gasket is to remove the cap off the coolant tank and rev the car, if the water flows out, there is air in the system indicating in most cases a head gasket failure

headgasket
If you can get the car to a garage, get them to put the pipe from the exhaust gas analyser, over the top of the coolant resovoir whilst the car is running. This will show a high hydrocarbon level on the analyser if there is combustion gasses in the coolant.

top hose split on the rad, causing misfire due to water in coil connections etc hence smoke from exhaust.. steam from under the bonnet when the water sprayed on the turbo

they are relatively cheap buddy, just pop into your local garage as 99% of them can carry out this test, should cost you all in £15-£20.... the test will let you know if there is any gases in your coolant system

Had a compression test this morning to reveal piston number 2 has gone and the head gasket on the left side has also packed in. Very dis-heartening as i have only had the car 4 months. I feel like being physically sick!!! I had a set of HKS iridium spark plugs fitted a couple of months ago and when it was unscrewed from port 2, the surrounding area around the spark pin was all loose and knackered. Could this be any cause or am i clutching at straws

Ouch. Very sorry to hear that mate.
Had the car been behaving at all strangely before the incident? A common cause of engine failures on MY99s is a dodgy MAF sensor. This causes the car to run lean and hey presto, there's a melted piston for ya! Guesswork untill the engine has been stripped though- could be something completely different!
Have a word with David from Api and he'll take you through the rebuild options. You can trust him to do an a1 job. It's going to be a big bill I'm afraid, so it's important you get the job done right first time. Then at least you'll have an engine you won't have to worry about for a LONG time.
All the best
