Remember this is the first "Production Line" STi's. From what I've seen they are a bit of a parts bin special.
My guess they used what they had in stock at the time. There often seems to be different gearboxes fitted to the early cars, and some none Jap STi's (Hong Kong / AU / NZ) have weird mixes.

Just been reading this post as I have a silver sti2 wagon with a 555 engine. According to Which Car is a WRX STi the EJ20G DW5PE engine was supposedly for a 4door 555 and produced 275bhp, compared to 260bhp.
Anyone know any different?

yep your right , thats because the 4 door saloon 555 produced 275bhp yet the 5 door wagon 555 produced 260 bhp . figures are from subaru not ones i made up , unless anyone knows different . and lets not forget that the 555 is not just an sti with stickers on, that would be unfair. It is an RA after all and built to commemorate colin mcrae world rally wins and the homologation car . and all v2 555 come with closed deck block which i belive is not the case for all sti engines .
