Just a bit of weapage (if you are not loosing loads of oil), tighten the circlip a tweak.

Have you topped up/changed your oil recently?

If so you may have over filled it, it then finds it's way into the intercooler.

Just a thought.

The breather system does vent into the pipework going to the intercooler, as such you will get some oil vapour in there. Not litres, but a small amount.

As Rob said, overfilling may cause abit more to appear.
Nothing to worry about if you are not loosing loads of oil.

only had the car a few weeks and only noticed this a few days ago, have regularly checked the oil and all seems ok-due a oil change in a few weeks.
Still getting my head round the car and was just concerned it maybe a sign of a problem.Have already had to change the front crank seal so was hoping this wasn't another bill looming.
thanks for the advice puts my mind at rest a bit.

No personal experience here, but I have read in numerous places that oil on the inside of an intercooler reduces it's efficiency. If you can confirm this is correct, then I would flush the intercooler clean and install an oil catch can to collect the oil vapors/mist before they reach your intercooler.

I found a similar thing when I was upgrading the intercooler.
It turned out that the previous owner had put a bit of oil around the joint to get the pipe on more easily because it was a bit tight.

Two points:

1: There shouldn't be enough oil in the i/c to leak out. Possibly due to overfilling oil or coming from a worn turbo. To eliminate the former you can run the breathers to the ground or fit a catch can.

2: Even if there is oil in the i/c it shouldn't leak out. I suggest you remove the i/c and inspect the pipework and i/c for leaks.

Hope it helps.

Bob

I'd agree totally with you Bob. Bottom line is that an intercooler isn't supposed to have ANY oil in it. I'd get it off and see what's what.

Take off the hose at the intercooler end coming from your turbo to see if thats where the oil is coming from, if your turbo oil seals are on their way out youll see quite a bit of oil in this hose, any more than a small amount means a fcuked turbo oil seal

I do a lot of short journeys to work approx 5-6miles although I dont abuse the car while cold do you think the short trips would cause the vapours to form within the system?
